I was wondering if someone can do me a favor and make some caps of blu-ray Smallville season 6 and/or 7. I won't have my HDTV for another month or so and want to see how it looks?? Does the transfer come out better than the standard DVD?

all transfers, even the worst, are better than dvd.
so, yes, the transfers are better than dvd. i own seasons 1-5 on dvd, and 6-7 on blu ray, and the difference is very noticeable. when watching in order, after finishing season 5, season 6 was given a huge boost due to the great pq in comparison to the dvd. now, compared to the great blu ray transfers like lost, etc, smallville doesn't compare in the slightest. but its worthy of blu ray for sure |

I post some comparisons tomorrow (later today?).
There is a huge difference but comparing the quality to other BD, there's no question that Smallville is on the end of the quality spectrum. The dark scenes are nothing but grain (look at season 6, episode "Subterranean", at the end when Lex is walking through the 33.1 corridors, terrible quality). Overall, if you're a fan of the series, definitely worth getting over the DVDs. |

Here's some screencaps, the SD are from season 5 and the BD are from season 7. This is on my HT listed in my signature and taken with a digital camera. (EDIT: I did forget to mention that these DVD shots are being upconverted by my PS3.)

The Blu-ray releases are nothing to write home about, and after watching some very good looking movies, they're pretty lackluster. They are of course better than the DVD's, but looking back on it I almost regret the purchase. Notice I said "almost".
Definent upgrade, but as Meeklo said, it's on the low end of the spectrum in terms of quality. |

What I want to know is when the heck Warner is going to give us 1-5 on Blu-ray (or at LEAST 5, which was available on HD DVD since the beginning). After King Kong streets this Tuesday, Smallville Season 5 will be the last thing Warner had on HD DVD that I still want.
PS: I'd like to add my voice to the people who say the Blu-rays are a huge step up from the DVD sets. Personally, I think the show looks great. Trying to compare a show like Smallville to a big budget Hollywood feature film is unfair and unrealistic. If you're a fan of the series, you will not be disappointed. I have 6 and 7, and I was very happy with the quality on both of them. The episodes look better than their HD broadcast versions, and you can't ask for much more than that on a release like this IMO. I started watching it a lont time ago and then stopped because I realized it was going no where quick, so I stopped watching it. I am getting back into it now that I thought it is it last season. Apparently it has been picked up for one more last season, how's that possible?

It finally feels like the show is progressing forward. It just seemed like the show was in a big rut for quite some time. The whole Clark and Lana back and forth, on again/off again just got REALLY old. I am glad that she left the show as a series regular. And while I do miss having Lex around for season 8, it's not really a complete loss. Even his storyline was getting old. Yeah, they finally transitioned him from being Clark's friend to being the villain in recent seasons, but the end result has been rather anti-climactic. The whole thing with him marrying Lana and basically being part of the 'on again off again' drama was lame. And beyond that, they didn't really do anything major with him as a direct villain. Most plotlines were him being the mastermind behind the scenes of some plot that Clark has to stop, and most of the time the end result was Clark suspecting Lex's involvement as the result of some vague evidence, resulting in a brief exchange of words at some point with Lex denying anything and trying to convince Clark that he (Clark) is being paranoid or jumping to conclusions, etc. It never really evolved beyond that. Even the big confrontation between them at the end of last season was rather 'meh'. I bought Seasons 6 and 7 on DVD when they came out, mainly because I have been pretty anal in the past about not wanting to split up a TV series between 2 different formats. And since they weren't the best seasons of the series anyway and I was buying them mostly for 'completist' sake, I didn't want to shell out the extra $ for Blu-Ray. Though, I've recently found my attitude on the splitting between formats thing changing lately, with me being more interested in getting the best quality possible. And since I've really been enjoying Season 8, I will likely get it on Blu-Ray when it comes out. |
