Default Masterpiece Lists

I want to know what people's lists of masterpieces are and why, and what we think of each other's. Here's mine:

Jisaatsu Saakaru (Suicide Club)
An incredibly powerful, totally disturbing, and incredibly relevant film on issues in pop culture and mass media.

Katakuri-ke no Kofuku (Happiness of the Katakuris)
The world's only horror-drama-crime-mystery-romance-comedy-claymation-zombie-musical, and it sets the bar HIGH.

Dark Water
The remake. Horribly mismarketed, but a wonderful drama/suspense with incredible atmosphere and wondrous acting, much better than the generic horror of the original.

The Dark Knight
Best superhero movie ever.

...there was one more, though I can't remember it...

Blade - The perfection action movie without depth

The Matrix - The perfect action movie with depth =P

OldBoy - As funny as it is intense. As intense as it is emotional. I could watch it over and over.

Leon - Doesn't even need an explanation

Casablanca - Timeless romance that is clever and plain cool

Gone With The Wind - I love the scope and cinematography. I also thought it's dark portrayal of people to be interesting for such an old movie.

That's what I can think of right now.

I honestly don't think I have ever watched one film and thought it was a masterpiece. Is that common or uncommon amongst people?

Fifth Element, The Dark Knight, Pulp Fiction, Godfather, All Pixar movies, Kung Fu Panda, Casino, GoodFellas, and Titanic. I think that Slumdog Millionaire and Gran Torino will make my "Masterpiece" list too.

As for my TV masterpiece list (if it counts): Seinfeld, Coupling (UK), Sopranos, ROME, True Blood, Curb your Enthusiasm, The Office, and Entourage

2001 A Space Oddysey- Perfection of the Science Fiction genre and a landmark film for teq, cam, and ideologies. Still stands up to todays standards.

Eraserhead- A Nightmare done perfectly.

There Will Be Blood- Everything about this film screams classic. Be it the acting, cinematography, directing; it's there.

The Godfather Serise- The films are just so good. Look and you can see.

Buffy - it has it's weak moments but the characters and their journey never cease to amaze me. not to mention Buffy is my favorite super hero period.

Oz - maybe tied with Buffy for just how deep and interesting the characters are. HBO's best show can be ridiculous but it's perfect entertainment.

Arrested Development - the best and most consistent comedy I've seen. everyone is perfectly cast.

Ed Wood - probably the best movie about someone's life. the director manages to make this guy far more interesting than he really is.

Anchorman - people that like this movie can watch it over and over. I'm one of those people.

Bridge To Terabithia - excellent cast and a surprisingly powerful movie about death

Conversations With Other Women - sometimes the two screens work, sometimes not so much. The story and chemistry of the leads is note-perfect. Aaron Eckhart and Helena Bonham in a powerful unique romantic film.

  • Blade Runner: The Final Cut (evolutionary movie, culnimating in the purity of The Final Cut)
  • 2001: A Space Odyssey
  • A River Runs Through It
  • Disney's Beauty and the Beast
  • Titanic (historical details)
  • Superman: The Movie (the subsequent 3 Christopher Reeve episodes paled by comparison)
  • Dead Poets Society
  • Gladiator

I'm sure there's more, but it's 2AM and I'm a little fuzzy at the moment!

For movie I would have to go with WALL-E, Ratatuille, ok, ok, anything from Pixar.

As far as TV shows I don't think that their really are many "masterpeices". Their too low budget for me to put them into that catagory. But I could list a few in terms of writing. The Mentalist, The Big Bang Theory, Psych, Dexter, and Arrested Development all were and some still are very well written.
