From imdb.com
Although many experts are predicting that the ability to "rent" or buy movies via the Internet will result in the demise of DVDs and Blu-ray discs, new research by Media Central Gfk International indicates that Blu-ray sales alone are expected to increase 150 percent this year to $2.9 billion. At the same time, cable video-on-demand and broadband will generate only $1.5 billion in revenue, the study indicated. The problem, experts agreed, is inherent in broadband services -- the virtual impossibility of delivering 1080p high-definition content to customers given the limitations of the Internet. "The bandwidth required to stream any type of HD video is way beyond what most households have," Michael Paxton, an analyst with In-State Scottsdale, Az told Home Media magazine. Go Blu ![]() |

Blu-ray Disc, Television, and Download On-Demand will always be the best quality.
The only way that wll change is when 10mb+ DSL/Cable lines drop to reasonable rates for consumers. As it stands now, streaming video services like NetFlix can only offer 720i quality video. Regardless of what your TV says it is, that is the highest quality it can be. On top of that, you get basic stereo sound from the HD download. To even stream 1080p quality video with 5.1 mpeg sound would take a lot of bandwith. My 1.5mbs connection tops out at 1.32mbs and all I get is near DVD quality video with NetFlix. However, with my PS3...I get a constant 1080p HD image with incredible surround sound. |

Read this this morning:
Netflix: What Recession? Streaming successes surprise even Netflix... While many companies this week were busy announcing layoffs, Netflix indicated a 45% jump in earnings. The company's already successful DVD rental service was buoyed by their recent broadband video partnerships, which allow the carrier to offer streaming services via Xbox 360, Roku, TiVO or BluRay players by both LG and Samsung. In a conference call with analysts, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings stated, not too surprisingly, those who use broadband streaming rent fewer physical disks. That spells trouble ultimately for physical media -- though Hastings says physical disk rentals still won't peak until at least 2013. There is just something about having the physical copy of a movie that I like, as a collector. Going to my rack to choose a movie opposed double clicking an icon... I don't know, that just doesn't sound right to me.
I hope blu-ray continues to grow and thrive. I dread the day when new movies only come as downloads. |

I agree with all of you guys as I get two free "HD" movies a month through work, but there is nothing, and I repeat NOTHING that's tops Blu-ray! It's convienent though if there's a movie that's new I can see it, but when it comes down to the come down Blu-ray destroys it hands down. I love it when customers think they are watching "HD" movies from their PC and think it's due to 15.0+ mbs per second....priceless!

I have a 24 inch, 1080p Samsung monitor and it gives off much better PQ then my projector does. But what I am trying to say is that the average person doesn't have an internet connection to their TV or Home theater.

I have 16mbps service soon, to be 22mbps.
Comcast has a monthly "soft" cap of 250GB. Simple math tells us that they will not like it if I started downloading BD quality videos - if any were offered. Rental downloads - expire. Purchases are expensive and are at the mercy of your HDD not failing. Some downloads might allow burning... never looked into it. From what info I have gathered, most of the downloads are less-than DVD quality. Uhm... no thanks. Until/if ever, something better happens along(in my lifetime), we will see. Hi! I'm David and I'm a Blu user! ![]() |

Right, but with today's TVs now coming with at least an option to be able to be hooked up to PC/internet, I think it's safe to assume that things are slowly creeping in that direction.
