Default Are the latest BD Players or Firmare Intollerant of BD+R or BD-RE discs?

I create videos of social, commmunity, amateur athletic, or travel events. I shoot them in high def, but must share the edited results mainly in SD because BD players remain rather scarce.

Using a Matshita drive, I've burned various projects to BD-R discs, which play back fine on my Sylvania BD player or a PS3. However, the success on other players is decidedly mixed. Some people report that their players can no longer play the discs after installing the latest firmware. Others can't play the discs at all.

Do the BD player manufacturers intentionally design the machines or firmware to reject BD-R or BD-RE discs? Do they accept only BD-ROM discs or discs with protection encryption? The itent might be to prevent playback of pirated videos. But might the consequence also be that the players do not accept legitimate BD video recorded by hobbyists, amateurs or small commercial videographers?

It appears that PS3 devices remain "open." But are the Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, and other makers all encoding their latest players of software to impede BD-R or BD-RE playback?
