Default New receiver (Onkyo vs Denon vs Denon)

I will try my best to describe the situation to you, in order to get any advice I can from the experts here.

My setup:
Sony 60GB PS3
Verizon FiOS HD cable
Sony Bravia 40" V-Series HDTV

My dilemma
I will eventually buy a stand-alone BD player. I will be purchasing a sub, a center, 2 fronts, and 2 surround speakers at the outset (the last pair of surrounds will come later). I've found a Denon avr-789 for $450, a Denon avr-889 for $600, and and Onkyo 706 for $600...

My questions to you all are:

Is the Denon 889 better than Onkyo 706? If so, what would I gain by getting the Denon 889 over the Denon 789 aside from an additional HDMI input?

Thanks all!

I've got a 3 month old Denon AVR2809CI I'm selling for $600.

It's better than all the above. Check it out.

They're about equal.

Here's a side by side comparison of the AVR2309 & 706. AVR2309 & AVR889 are the same receiver just different model #'s from Denon.

I'd go for Zippo's 2809. First of all, it's $300.00 less than you can get it for online. So it's used 3 months. Look at his system, it's immaculate. Then there's the Burr Browns, Audyssey XT & Denon reliability over the Onkyo 706.- & I own an Onkyo!

I wouldn't consider the lower Denons- no pre-outs. Maybe that's just me, but I know I may want to add an Emotiva some day.

The Onkyo is a distant 2nd, if you can't stomach used equipment.

Denons are great receivers. The one I purchased (I feel) is the best price/performance ratio out there, period, end of story.

The Onkyo models offer some incredible value. The problem I found with them was their reputation for over-heating and the infamous bluedot problem. I just did not want to pay $500+ for a piece of electronics that might give me grief.

I've owned all 3 in the past 3 months. The one I liked the best was the Onkyo TX-SR806 and the Denon AVR-2809CI. The 2809CI remote is just awesome. My first Onkyo 806 back in Dec had numerous problems such as the blue dot.

It led me try the Denon AVR-2809CI... which led to audio and video dropouts about once an hour... which I then exchanged for the AVR-2309CI... which had that same problem. The problem only exists with Sony KDL TVs and Denon Receivers.

This led me to return the AVR-2309CI for the TX-SR806 since I had the best experience with it minus the blue dots. When I received it in the mail, I realized that Onkyo fixed the problems. Anyways, for the $600 range, I'd recommend the TX-SR806 over the 2309CI (889). If you were to compare it with Zippo's 2809CI, then I'd choose either or. I just like the Onkyo for the THX certification.

Denon review compared to onkyo

This is for the AVR1909, which is the same model as the AVR789. They compare it to the Onkyo TXSR606, but they will have similar comparisons.
