USA The Act of Killing (2012) - January 7, 2014

Quote:
A documentary that challenges former Indonesian death squad leaders to reenact their real-life mass-killings in whichever cinematic genres they wish, including classic Hollywood crime scenarios and lavish musical numbers.

Thanks, but I prefer my horror fictional. Definitely the most WTF synopsis I've read in a while. Add in my hate for musical numbers and it's an easy pass for me.

I heard nothing but great things about the doc, and I like gonzo concepts to go with my docs. Stinks that the film wasn't available in my hometown or on demand, but I guess I'll give it a look.

Still bummed that I passed up the chance to see the directors cut for the brief time it played back home. If that's included on this release, I'll definitely pick it up.

Already getting this since its through my Drafthouse Alliance membership. I'm really excited to see this. I've been excited for this for quite some time.

It will be included as far as I know, along with a commentary by Oppenheimer and Herzog.

I may check this out at the theater next week, as one of the theaters in the city will be getting this. Otherwise, I'll probably check it out On Demand and see how I like it.

This looks riveting. Hope to see it soon, but Blackfish is before it on my list.

The reviews have sold me on this one. It looks like something truly different, that gets at some essential truths about human nature.

I just updated the listing with the latest information from Drafthouse. The director's cut is included. It's a two-disc release, with the theatrical cut on one disc and the director's cut on a second. The commentary accompanies the longer director's cut.

Saw this at the AFI Film Festival in Maryland this past summer. The entire theatre was absolutely silent throughout the entire film and when it ended everyone just kind of sat there for a moment before filing out in absolute silence. The only other film in recent memory where I experience such a stunned audience was Zero Dark Thirty.

Believe the hype about The Act of Killing. There really aren't words to accurately describe what you will witness.

As a social studies teacher, I think this movie needs to be seen by as many people as possible.

The DC is deffo the weaker cut I thought, there were only like 2 things in it that made an impression and it really dragged. The theatrical cut is much better IMO.

my only reaction to Zero - was rolling my eyes and saying 'overrated' under my breath.

you'd think a mod could correct the thread header with the new release date [hint hint]

The Act of Killing sounds like the gore and violence is necessary for you to understand the more sadistic, dark side of humanity. I'll just watch Almodovar's 'I'm So Excited' afterward to get that out of my head.

There really isn't any blood and gore. There's no archival footage. The only footage that actually involves blood is with the gangster crew, and it's all very amateurish.

Well, I didn't mean to give the impression I thought this was an Indonesian style Texas Chainsaw Massacre. In his review Michael says any gore is obviously fake, and in the trailer on IMDB you can see a beheading is very obviously not real. Violence and torture doesn't have to convince me it's real to be a downer for me.
