Default PSN Maintenance 3/4: 14 Hours & Completely Offline (Sunday 12pm PST - 2am PST)

Normally I wouldn't think this would deserve a new thread, but it's a bit different this time. As bolded below, typically some can usually play and sign on during maintenance events, but not access the store or their account. But Sony says this week, NOBODY gets online and anyone online gets kicked off at 8am Pacific.

Quote:
PlayStation Network will undergo a significant maintenance period on Thursday, March 1st. Maintenance is expected to start at just after 8:00 am Pacific and will last for several hours, until approximately 10pm Pacific.

Unlike typical maintenance events, consumers who are already signed-in to PSN will be signed-out, and consumers will be unable to sign in for the duration of the maintenance window. During this time, users won’t be able to access the PlayStation Store, PlayStation Home, Account Management or play online.

PSN enabled websites will not be able to service users, including this one. Please stay tuned to the PlayStation Twitter feed for a notice when PSN is fully back online.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Good points. They usually wait until right before and say "oh btw guyz psn down for 8 hours starting in 20 mins thx 4 understanding!"

And at least its not on a launch day like tomorrow (SSX woo!)

Regular server maintenance and upgrades. It's not uncommon for IT networking departments to do their "housekeeping" on Thursday nights. I know Time Warner does it, as well as a few e-tailers.

8am-10pm Pacific isn't Thursday night. That's most of Thursday

If I had my choice, I'd have them do it Sunday night, something like 10pm-noon Pacific. I have to imagine that's the time with the lowest number of people online, before Monday morning work/school. For Europe it would be 4am-6pm, and while that is less ideal, at least they could play after work that evening.

Also, it is irregular for Sony to completely kick everyone off for server maintenance. They have done it 3 or 4 times so far this year with just account/store/home unavailable, so one would naturally assume this is a bigger maintenance thing.

My company does Thursday also. Although, Thursday night, not during the day. Thursday actually turned out to be the day with the least volume (less than Sunday). Remember that for video games plenty of people are playing Sunday night. Thursday during the day is probably one of the best windows. Lots of people are at work, etc. Weekend windows also cost the company doing them a lot more money.

The timing of these maintenance periods bugs me. I know its not that often so why don't they start it at like 12am PST (8am GMT). At that time, most of North America is sleeping while Europeans are working or in school.

You could technically say that for any weekday. But remember - this isn't just day maintenance. This is morning, day, afternoon, all evening and a little twilight. A 4-6hr maintenance during the day would probably be fine for most.

And are you just speculating about plenty playing Sunday night? I mean, when I was in college, most people were doing the homework they put off all weekend, not playing games. And I wouldn't be surprised if teens were similar. From my experience, Thursday nights are just as busy as any other night. Especially if there's something to be done by Monday, "I'll just do it this weekend" which turns into Sunday night...

Update: Tomorrow's scheduled PSN maintenance has been postponed. We'll update everyone once it's rescheduled. Until then, game on.

So...uh...nothing to see here...maybe a Mod can change the title.

I guess that's a negative for online MW3 & Uncharted 3 then... Why couldn't they move they time frame to the right? Say 4 or 5pm? Just wondering. And by the way MaCruz...
