Is there anyone using the Onkyo audyssey over a SPL and what's the trade offs?

I wouldn't think of NOT using it..An spl meter is not going to make room corrections. Go here for better explanations

Your best bet is to run the Audyssey setup, so it can set the correct distances and delays, and then follow up with the SPL meter for fine tuning.

use the spl meter for distance and level calibration. Audyssey is used for room correction considering your room will be different than anyone else.

sorry, didnt mean distance. use spl meter for level calibration. I appreciate you of course pointing that out.
