Default I need a sub...

Tough times with a kid on the way, but I need a subwoofer. I want something accurate, and capable of going LOOOWWWWW. I just dumped off my old subwoofer to my brother (after weighing the pro's and con's of trading it in at the shop I got it at, and limiting myself to what subs they could get for me)

I hear great things about the E.D. Subs, but I'm not keen on having a monstrous subwoofer shipped to me, so I can audition it, then if I don't like it, I'd have to ship it back etc.... (Keep in mind my movie room is on the third floor, making getting my old one in and out a huge pain that I don't care to go through too many more times)

I have the ML Abyss on the short list right now, because I have listened to it extensively, but I may keep a very close eye on Audiogon.

I haven't set a concrete budget up yet, but a Gothem isn't in my future, and after my last "venture" with subs, I have decided price and performance certainly aren't a direct correlation to one another. I may go the multiple sub route, but again, room limitations are in place

I know Marcus has the sub I just had, and he loves it, so maybe my new room is more to blame than the sub itself, but either way, I tried multiple placements, and never was happy with my sub.

I would also like to look at SVS's line, but the same thing applies with the shipping etc.

I've listened to various Velodynes, and always liked them, but not in comparison to the price I could get the Def Techs for (which I had previously)

What other brands should I branch out to, keeping it below $1,500 or so?

Check out HSU research. LINK

They go deep and you can get great prices on them. They typically arent as large as the SVS, but are still pretty darn big.

Get a big ol' cylinder SVS sub!

... would you be able to fit it up the stairs?

I'm sure I can get a cylinder up the steps..... I need to measure the doorway for the others though

I'll look into HSU also, but again, I'd need to ship, audition, etc... Knowing me, I won't find the right one right away.

If you get an ED sub you will only have to worry about getting it up the stairs once. Cuz your not going to want to send it back, Trust Me

Unlike me who just took a dive on a sub without an audition and based off reviews, for the price the A2-300 was perfect, it's nice to see someone who will attempt to audition different subs without just going off rave and popular reviews. I can't really give you suggestions on good subs. The ED subs build qaulity is outstanding, but they are big and heavy once you start to get in the mid level subs. If you're worried about the shipping cost...yeah that's an issue. Shipping damage, I wouldn't worry to much about it. My ED sub showed up undamaged and was well packed with 4inch thick hard foam blocks on each corner, and the box was still firm and held together to take a return travel if it had too. Good luck on your search thought.

You might want to look into the more affordable members of the JL Audio line. I've had a Fathom f110 for a couple of weeks now and it floors me every single day. It's fast, accurate, and fills my 26x15x8 room like I never thought a 10" sub could. Highly recommended!

Do they sell much below MSRP? I could ask around at local dealers to see if someone will order one for me to audition (my usual shop isn't one of their authorized dealers) I'd have to get it for under $2,000 to even consider putting it on the list.

I know you are not liking the idea of internet direct. If I had your budget though, I would be looking at dual MFW-15s.

Have you seen eD's new 18" sub? It is much nicer looking that any of their other subs. It is also built with a custom 18", 50lb.+ driver.

A pair of these would also be a good thing. They are sealed so they are even better for music but are still very loud (100+dB at 20hz).

I'll look into it.... 215 lbs shipping weight isn't completely out of the realm of something I'd consider, and it's 30" deep so I could get it up the steps..... but again, setting it up in my room to audition it would be a lot of effort if I decided it wasn't for me ...... I'm also worried about the accuracy of a driver that sized (my 14" wasn't as articulate as I would have liked)

I honestly don't know if JL is price locked. My dealer was able to shave a little off the overall package for me, which included new fronts and a center, but I don't know for sure if that would have been the case if I had been after the sub on its own.

It's an amazing piece of gear though; a huge step up for me.

If you want more articulate bass, look at the sealed subs I linked you too. The eD should have plenty of musicality though considering it is completely designed around the driver.

What about a Sunfire EQ 12 Signature. I know these bang.

I'm sure you have heard them also and if you don't like them, I am curious as to why not. When my budget permit me to upgrade my subs, I want two of these.

**** EDIT *****
Plus it's in your price range at the moment or possible lower

I listened to a sunfire with a much smaller driver (8" I believe) and it just wasn't worth the price to me for its output. You can't really cheat physics in my opinion.....

I'd certainly like to hear what their 12" driver can do though.

A friend of mine has this with his Def Tech's and for it to be so tiny and punch so hard; it's a nice 12' subwoofer. It would seem that 12' and tiny shouldn't go together.

This is an expensive sub but is a small 12" that is 15.5" deep. It looks very nice and has a 500Watt Bash Amp along with built in EQ and digital display.

It is sealed so it can be much smaller than the other ported subs and this thing puts out some deep bass.

Free shipping both ways at 62 lbs. I really like the SVS and HSU subs myself but didn't have the money for trying one out.
