Default Not new but newbie question (PS3)

My ps3 doesn't upconvert 720p games to 1080p. Instead it just plays them standard and looks horrible.

If I use something other than 1080p HDMI cables will it play 720p? Or is it hopeless?

What kind of set do you have? If your set doesn't support 720p then yeah, it gets downconverted to SD. It's one of the things I hate the most about the PS3. I had a 1080i set for awhile that didn't support 1080p or 720p and it left me out in the cold with games.

The difference is that the xbox360 will convert it for you, while the PS3 won't. It's actually one of the reasons I initially didn't have a PS3. The 360 is a little bit better in this regard.

Dollars to donuts your set doesn't do 720p.

On the HDMI settings on the PS3, did you have 1080p ticked on and 720p/1080i ticked off? If you do, then that could be the main culprit. You can't force the PS3 to upconvert.

You looked and didn't see the option to turn it on? How do you hook up your PS3 to this TV? What cable do you use?

To get 720p/1080i, you need this cable to connect your HDTV to your PS3. This is a PS3 component cable.

To get 1080p, you need this cable. This is a standard HDMI cable.
