Cars has an Aspect Ratio of 2.40:1, and it does have black bars on its BD release. Here's the question, why is it that they will keep some movies in their true Aspect Ratio on HDTV, while others, including Cars, will display them in full screen ratio? Does this mean that a full screen type aspect ratio was also made, or what? Because the picture isn't stretched or anything, it looks just as good as the Blu-Ray version looks with black bars.

On stations like that including TNT if you noticed it's a little stretched on the top and bottom. Makes the people a little thinner. You can tell on some of the tv shows on NBC, CBS where it looks like that.

it is really hard to compare blu ray animation to animation that is played over cable and satellite because the animation is so flawless, especially the newer pixar stuff!
My jaw still drops to the floor when i pop in cars on blu! absolutely stunning |

You should set your box to 1080i if possible then. 720p signals will have to be scaled to 1080p when displaying on a 1080p set. 1080i signals don't really have to be scaled, just deinterlaced, so they're a lot closer to a 1080p signal vs 720p.

^ Really? Huh I always thought 1080i was a lower from of HD. The WWE broadcasts in 1080i it looks really low quality compared to the p settings. Thanks for that I'll give it a try.

That is possible, i should have mentioned that it also depends on your tv as well. If it's not very good at deinterlacing signals, it could look worse than 720p in fast motion sequences.

1080i has more picture information, it just runs at a slower speed. 720p runs faster, but has less picture information.
In other words, with 720p, your getting 720 lines of info at 60 updates a second. With 1080i, your getting 1080 lines of information at 30 frames per second. There isn't much in it to the naked eye. |

720p is only 1280x720 (921 thousand active pixels) though the framerate is 60fps. Shows like LOST and 24 are shot at 24fps so there's usually no advantage to the faster framerate other than sports. As far as what your cable offers it depends on the channel. FOX and ABC owned stations (like ESPN, Family, etc) are 720p. NBC, CBS, and CW and just about every other channel are 1080i. You need to make sure the cable box output is also set to 1080i. Last edited by PeterTHX; 03-15-2009 at 01:49 AM. |

Except that in the case of HDTV broadcasts, Pixar generally does not alter the film for 1.78:1 themselves.
Finding Nemo was on ABC HD and it was OAR. Cars is cropped on the sides to fill 1.78:1. All ABC HD, ABC Family HD, Disney HD, Disney XD HD, and ESPN HD broadcasts are in 720p so you are not physically able to get 1080i from these. Your TV would have to do the upconversion if it can. That means that the Blu-ray Disc offers the best picture with full 1080p and best sound with PCM 5.1 (the HD broadcast is Dolby Digital 5.1). Shows like Lost and Grey's Anatomy also gain picture quality on BD since, again, they are going from 720p to 1080p. As for shows being stretched, all the newly produced shows (Chuck, Cold Case, My Name is Earl) are all native 1.78:1 and either cropped on the sides for 1.33:1 or letterboxed. My Name Is Earl even played with the wider aspect ratio of HDTV with special easter eggs that can only be seen in the HD broadcast but lost in the SD. Even The Simpsons joked about high-definition during their first HD episode. |
