Sony cuts price of PS3 development kit

Initially, the development kit cost $20,000 USD but the price was halved in late 2007.

While this move wont make a difference to large publishers, small independent developers should be very excited for the price drop which will allow them to finally see the PS3 as a viable alternative.

Seeing how Sony cut the dev kit from $10K to $2K, we could see alot more games made by small developers hitting PSN!

^^no it means that we'll have more people working on games which is a good thing for everyone, because i'm sure that there are some very talented devs who can't afford to pay for a dev kit

Not to mention that larger devs can buy more dev kits, and publishers can also buy more dev kits to send out to their dev partners.

Lol, I wouldn't count on it. I own a small software company and went through the entire application process with Sony last year only to be denied. We've been in busy 15 years, never lost money, and had a game 80% complete. You can still see the videos I posted here as part of the application process (really old builds).

Fortunately for me, MS released their CG service for independents and you only need an Xbox and a $50.00 subscription to release games on the Xbox. Our game will be hitting sometime in the next month. I was really disappointed in Sony and did something I never thought I would do, bought an Xbox

Sony really needs to something similar as MS now has over 200 games from independents and a lot of them are really good. I had hoped that releasing on the Xbox would give me the ability to re-apply with Sony but at this point, I've invested so much time in their architecture that I just don't see it being viable.

Just my 2 cents from someone who's been down that road.

I suppose there is no point in showing tech builds to non programmers.

That was a bare bones test level to show the mechanics. The point was that we had a solid platform and some uncommon features, not the look. None of that is in the game. The destructable environments and programatic animation were the key points.
