It certainly wouldn't take a group of rocket scientists to figure out that Onkyo should not be developing an HD-DVD player. I'm surprised it took them this long to realize that.

Their player would have been expensive and that flys in the face of the cheap HD Dead crowd. Aything over $500 and they would scream bloody murder.

If they decide to make a player, it'll be interesting to see if it's made for the new receivers. They should be able to pass DTS MA bitstream to the reciever so you can apply different sound fields if you wish. (or at least an onboard DTS MA decoder to pass via pcm)

There's a market for a Combo player with DVD-Audio and SACD support IMO.

Price for this device wouldn't be quite so sensitive. I'd love to see

Blu-ray/HD DVD
SACD/DVD-Audio
Divx support
Networking
SATA drive for persistent storage.

THIS would be worth $1299! Onkyo has to date done an excellent job with delivering combo players and their new AVR support HDMI-CEC for device control so the more functions they can put into one player the better usability is for the audio/video system.

I think it's smart if they make a dual format player. If combos are to be the future then they'll be among the first to get started. Besides, they can charge more and won't have to compete directly with Toshiba and even lower priced players that could emerge later from China.

Thumbs down Dual format players?

In my opinion, two formats are unnecessary and inconvenient. This is not like DVD-Audio (PCM) vs. Super Audio CD (DSD). We don't need two formats, so I don't want combos to be the future.

Exactly.

Not surprising that HD-DVD supporters in this thread would feel otherwise, since it's really the only way "their" beloved format can ever survive.

I wonder if I'd need any fingers to count how many BD people think things like combo players and TotalHD discs are a good idea.

Bingo!

I also agree with the statement that only HD-DVD supporters would see this as a good idea......

The better solution would be for Universal Studios to release in BLU-RAY then there is no market or need for combo players. Now if Universal Studios never did release in BLU-RAY then there is a market for combo players for movie collectors.

Yes there is a nitchie market....its doomed to nitchieville....just like universal players have never sold ziltch to the masses.

Well over 15 million sa-cd players out there with many being based on a Universal player.
How many do your freinds and neihbors own?
How many people do we even know that has a clue to what SA-CD/ DVD-A is?

Seeings how stand alone HD players from both formats haven't even put a dent in the sa-cd player numbers yet....puts things in proper pespective.

The only way to have any chance at eventually competing with sd dvd sales for HD optical...is to have only one format for the masses to choose from.
Anything else is 100% doomed to nitchie status at best.

So only people who are interested in downloads being the future should be supporting both formats...and the rest of us who see things for what the are....support only BD.

Folks, Onkyo won't be the last CE manufacturer to come to their senses. Just look at the numbers in favour of Blu-ray for sales, studio support and CE support. If they are thinking of putting out a combo player, all they need to do is look at the abysmal LG sales numbers to help them make the right decision. Blu-ray or the highway folks. Combos are for HD DVD supporters who are struggling to come to terms with having chosen the wrong format.
