Default What Xmas movies do you want in the National Film Registry (NFR)?

*Updated 2025*

In the NFR currently:
  • It's a Wonderful Life (1946)
  • Miracle on 34th Street (1947)
  • The Apartment (1960)
  • A Christmas Story (1983)
  • Die Hard (1988)
  • Home Alone (1990)

I want in the NFR:
  • Gremlins (1984)
  • Scrooged (1988)
  • National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989)
  • Edward Scissorhands (1990)
  • How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)
  • The Family Man (2000)
  • Bridget Jones's Diary (2001)
  • Love Actually (2003)
  • The Polar Express (2004)
  • The Family Stone (2005)
  • The Holiday (2006)

I'm adding The Holdovers to something I'll be watching every Christmastime.

Die Hard ain't a Christmas movie to me. I'll watch that any time and be just as pleased.

1994's The Santa Clause movie is a classic, and the second one is pretty good as well. But the third is basically "The Martin Short Show", which completely misses the point. I haven't seen the limited series, but I heard it was better than its immediate predecessor.

I don't know if they're already in the Registry or not, but all the 1960s TV specials should definitely be included. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Little Drummer Boy...even 1974's 'Twas the Night Before Christmas should be thrown in for good measure.

Sorry, I didn't realize the op said do you want in the Registry now.

I just realized you actually are the op. So you thank the post only to bump two weeks later and attempt to correct our choice....ok.

I honestly didn't see the title in that way. I just thought you were asking which films are going into your holiday watch rotation.

Anyway, I assume it'll be a holdover for the next nine years in awaiting its turn.

As long as the 1951 Scrooge (A Christmas Carol) with Alastair Sim is there, I'm happy.

The Muppets Christmas Carol. Not only is it a great Christmas movie, but one of the best versions of this story on film with one of the best Scrooge performances. I also think it's the best Muppet movie.

This was a family favorite when I was young, and it still holds up. Just unfortunate Disney hasn't put the uncut version on Blu-ray.

Are the Rankin Bass stop-motion miniature films like Rudolph, Santa Comes to Town and Rudolph's Shiny New Year (And Christmas in July, Jack Frost, Nestor the Donkey, Little Drummer Boy, etc.) from them in the National Film Registry yet? I haven't paid attention and didn't know there was a thing, other than maybe at the major library or museum.

That would be cool in addition to the films above.
