Default Female mini plug to RCA red and white adapter question

Hey guys, I am almost positive this will work, but My Sony TV has red and white out plugs for external speakers/amplifier. If I purchases a female mini plug to RCA Y adapter, I should be apple to use my computer speakers with this tv correct? that would give me 2.1 sound. Stere and a sub..

Thanks

I don't see why that wouldn't be possible. Go for it, at most you would lose the money from purchasing the adapter. Even then, that is less than five dollars invested.

Well, I was also thinking If I don't want to invest in a whole new receiver for 5.1/7.1 which would be the better investment? an adapter for the computer speaker,s which are 2.1 left right and a sub, or a soundbar, which I think is also 2.1, but i think can connect to hdmi or optical depending on which one you get. Any thoughts? I know I can get a decent soundbar for relatively cheap.

I personally would go the cheaper route. The difference between a sound-bar and most PC speakers would be about the same quality. So, if you already own a pair of PC speakers, I would go get a Y adapter and hook it up. While a sound-bar may be able to accept spdif and/or HDMI, it's really not much of a benefit sound wise. Sound-bars also cost a few hundred dollars for the ones with HDMI.

I think you are better off to save your money for now and put it towards a new receiver and front sound stage (Left, right, center be it bookshelf or floor standing speakers), then expand to the surrounds later on.

Well, the environment in question would be the bedroom either a sound bar or the computer speakers would work, since it would cheaper to just get the adapter, I might go that route, but if I do then i'll have no speakers left for the laptop beyond the built in ones. so that's why I mentioned a sound bar option. In the living room, I have a 7 year old panasonic theater in a box, while it doesn't take digital in it has stereo in. and then I can turn on dolby pro logic which works well for external sources and use the built in DVD/CD changer for true 5.1/DTS sound. Blu-ray audio in pro logic sounds good enough for right now not to invest in a new setup. I'd like to be in a bigger place before I do that, and have a bigger budge so i can do it right the first time around.
