Default What is the best Surround Sound System-Please help

Can anyone help me with this-I'm wanting to buy a surround sound system for my living room where my blu-ray player is going to go but I have no idea what is the best way to go.

well, you dont want a HTIB (Home Theater In A Box). You want to peice it all together. I suggest the Onkyo 605 for the Receiver and as far as speakers, they all sound different. Best is to go to a shop and hear them in person.

^ exactly.

The one recommendation I can make is go with separates. Separate amplifier and preamplifier/processor.

You can start with a US$2000 budget. US$500 for the receiver (the new Onkyo 605) and the rest goes to speakers, including sub. I think this percentage holds true the higher the budget you have.

Damn, that is a hard one for anyone to answer. First, how much you wanna spend??

Well, here is what I have: JVC RXD412B Audio/Video Control Receiver, it costs about $400 but it is well worth it. That is a good starting point.

I did quite a bit of research and visited several stores and listened to everything I could find. Here's what I went with, and I'm nothing short of pleased:

Panasonic DMP-BD10 Blu-Ray player
Pioneer VSX-82TXS A/V Receiver
Center Channel Speaker: Definitive Technology Mythos Three
Front Speakers: Definitive Technology Mythos Ones (2)
Subwoofer: Definitive Technology Supercube 1
Surround: Definitive Technology Mythos Gems (2)
Rear Surround: Definitive Technology Mythos Gems (2)

Obviously, I'm a fan of Definitive Tech but that was what I settled on based upon personal comparisons. I couldn't be more pleased with this setup and the sound is ridiculous. It's somewhat expensive to set up, but in my opinion it's well worth it and will keep up with whatever's going to be thrown at it (in terms of technology development) for the next few years to come.

I'm also a big fan of Definitive and from the New Orleans area. I live in Japan now so I don't have very big rooms. My daughter visited me a few weeks ago and she brought me a new set of Definitive Pro Cinema 800 speakers (from Alterman Audio). I opted to get the pro 1000 sub for an extra $100 bringing the total to $1200. The sound is amazing to say the least. I have an older pair of Definitive towers in my music room that cost $2000 11 years ago and the sound quality of the cheaper speakers in on par with those.

You get a lot of bang for your buck with Definitive. As a suggestion, give them a listen if there's a shop in your area and go from there comparing them with other brands.

currently I have a Kenwood Receiver and a couple of Monitor Audio Speakers-so I was trying to decide if I should just add onto the monitor audio stuff or get brand new speakers. Front/Back/Center/ETc.

i did quite a bit of shopping around first and
a guy at a small local shop told me denon was a great receiver to go with because they use the same quality stuff in their cheaper receivers as their more expensive ones your pretty much paying for more options not better quality base components. so thats what i got and its awesome and theyre not badly priced. like everyone else said speakers are personal preference. theres hundreds of little companies out there that youve never heard of that make awesome products for a fair price and youre buying quality products not just the name. i chose paradigm, they were kinda pricey but they have awesome sound quality.
