United Kingdom Isadora (Karel Reisz)

Isadora Blu-ray

Coming from Odeon. Street date: October 1. Starring Vanessa Redgrave, James Fox, and Jason Robards.

Quote:
A biography of the dancer Isadora Duncan, the 1920s dancer who forever changed people's ideas of ballet. Her nude, semi-nude, and pro-Soviet dance projects as well as her attitudes on free love, debt, dress, and lifestyle shocked the public of her time.

Thanks for the heads-up on this important release!! Have you any idea if this release will be the original uncut "roadshow" version of "Isadora" or the cut-down "Loves of Isadora." I was fortunate to see the original in its early run and later in the same run the cut version. The original is, of course, vastly preferable. Region-free, I hope as well.

No definitive word, still, on which version this will be?

Does anyone know why this release has apparently been cancelled?

It's been re-announced for 18 May! Let's hope it actually happens this time.

Isadora just received. Marked Region B, but plays on my Sony Region A player. Odd running time: 140 minutes. Extras: Melvyn Bragg and James Fox on Isadora; Aquarius-Isadora Duncan; Only surviving film footage of Isadora Duncan Performing. 16:9, 2.0 dual mono.

I believe the cut down version was ~138 min, which is probably what this is, give or take.

So not the director's cut (153 min) or the original cut (168 min).

Having not seen the film since its original cinema release, I must confess to being somewhat underwhelmed on this re-acquaintance. As biopics go, IMHO, this is not one of the better ones. I'm not sure that having the extra footage in the longer cuts would drastically improve it.

I saw both versions a week apart in Los Angeles upon first release. The uncut version is indeed vastly superior to the shorter one. It's been many years since I've seen both, but I never forgot that first impression.
I now own this release and am relatively pleased. But I hope for the original to be restored and released one of these days.
