I was reading in a science mag that they are working on something that will make movies be in perfect focus so that both the foreground and background are in crystal sharp focus at the same time.
Maybe they were using metamaterials ... don't remember for sure ... but it's not even in the prototype stage yet. Hopefully, a breakthrough will come in our life time and WOW us away at the theater and home cinema. |

I think the soft-focus of the background is very stylish and artistic, so I bet many directors will still choose to film "The old Fashioned way" but it's nice to see the technology advance..... it'll make nature documentaries etc. pretty cool looking. |

I also recall hearing about this recently. From what I understood the way it works is that these specialized cameras/lenses would be able to capture an "infinite amount of depth of field", so to speak, rendering everything in a frame perfectly sharp. After the shooting process is complete, it would then be possible to adjust the depth of field to your liking during the editing stage using the accompanied software.

Human eyes can focus on anything in a real scene. They can't focus on something in a movie if that part of the scene was filmed out of focus.

Of course it would be stupid to film a whole movie like that, instead this type of camera could be used in a sequence to symbolically highlight certain stuff. I can imagine a guy like Chris Nolan use this like he did with IMAX. Imagine to have everything in focus at all time, when used right it could simply be wonderous! I'm going to have to say that your statement is stupid (not you! your statement is). |
