Default Thinking about getting a used PS3...

I'm about to get a PS3,40g, for around $200.

Questions I have:

I am looking to hook it up to an older reciever which I run DTS through an optical connection. Will I be able to decode BR DTS optically?

Do I need a remote to access all the features, or can I do it through the joystick?

The player is about 7 months old, what is the reliability?

I am primarily buying it for BR movies, but would like to occasionally play some old PS1 and 2 games, can I do that?

I am hooking it up to a projector, component out to VGA in the projector,I assume that can be done, yes?

All in all, is it a good deal for $200?

Thanks in advance from a serious Newbie!

Yes, it works the same way as it would a DVD player. Just make sure that when you get it, you set the optical out to bitstream.

The remote is just a luxury item. You can control everything with the Six Axis.

People here on the forums leave it on 24/7 to help out with Folding @ Home and never have problems. 7 months should be like new.

The 40GB model is not backwards compatible so you'll only be able to play PS3 games.

As long as you buy the component cables and adapter, yes.

As long as the previous owner took good care of it, I'd say yes. Hell of a deal for a Blu-ray player.

You can always get a SquareTrade warranty just in case - they're super cheap and there's always a 20% off coupon code floating around somewhere (google).

I agree with all information in the previous posts, but you need to realize that the PS3 warranty is for one year from date of purchase. If it breaks you must provide a copy of the proof of purchase (receipt), so be sure to get that if it's available. Otherwise you'll be paying $150 to fix it. Also, verify the serial number has not been scratched off or in any way altered. If it has been Sony won't touch it for any amount of money.

Personally, if I weren't a big gamer (which I'm not) I would buy the Samsung BD-P3600. I just sent my PS3 in for repairs after it crapped out on me (after 18 months). As it is certain purchases (i.e. Rock Band, Harmony adapter) have locked me in to the PS3.

Why the PS3 per se? There are other options out there obviously.

Are you going to play PS3 games and utilize the player's other features besides? I don't know about the fan noise on the 40GB, but I'm not real happy with it with the 60GB. But at the time, this was the player to get after the price dropped and I do play games, etc.

Well, from what I've heard, it's one of the best BR players around.

The only thing I don't like is the fact that I can not play PS1 or 2 games.

Will it play older anamorphic DVDs in the proper enhanced ratio?

It has been and still is the reference Blu-ray player. If you want backwards compatibility, you can shop around for the version capable of doing that. They're out there. As far as the anamorphic DVDs go, I'm not sure. I do recall having DVDs that have filled my widescreen TV though. I wonder if this is what I was seeing.
