It would need to be formated to FAT32 first before you could hook it up via USB as an external backup drive.

From my experience, when I had a Western Digital MYBOOK (the larger externals) it wouldn't register with the PS3.

However, I got a Western Digital MY PASSPORT (smaller ones) and they work perfectly.

Weird.

You would use your computer to do the formating and it has to be FAT32.

If you are using a computer with XP or Vista, you may want to download this tool. This will allow you to format most USB devices at FAT32, otherwise your only option will be NTFS.

Also, all of the files that can be placed onto an external USB HDD need to be in specific directories on that HDD. The simplest way to create the proper directory structures is to copy something to it and it will create them for you. Otherwise google "PS3 directory structure" for the list of all directories.

I've never had to do that.

I can stick everything in a folder marked "random stuff" and it'll see them, as long as they're applicable filetypes such as avi, mp3, etc.

I just hit TRIANGLE and DISPLAY ALL and voila!

and there are no PS3 DATA or PS3 VIDEO or whatever folders.

So I decided I'm just gonna go buy an internal hdd for the ps3. I read that 250 is the maximum size I can put? is it true? Because BB is selling a 300 gig for 5 bucks more.

there have been people I've talked to on this site that have upgraded to 500 gig. That is what I plan on doing in the next month or so. Check newegg for best deals on internal.

Yeah. I decided to go with the 320. But the HDD itself was only 298.
Why advertise 320, or 160 etc..if its not really 320 or 160 even if there's nothing on it.

Unfortunately that's how they sell stuff these days. The calculations are based on 1mb = 1000kb, whereas the actual is 1mb = 1024kb. When you get up to GB that ends up being a big difference in the actual storage compared the 'advertised' storage.

It is an infamous fraud that HDD manufacturers have nurtured for a long time now. It's frustrating, for sure.

When I upgraded the HDD in my PS3, the original drive was screwed in so tightly at factory (the mounting tray was warped by how tightly it was screwed in), that I ended up stripping the heads on a couple of those screws just to extract the drive. I got the new one in OK, but if I ever upgrade again, I may just see about getting new mounting hardware from Sony first.

That is just my experience. Hopefully, it is unique to me.
