Default I just don't get it...

I know two people who have nice HDTV's, one has a Sony BD player and the other a PS3.

Neither of them buy nor rent BD's though. They spent all that money to get the TV and players but they still only use regular DVD's.

One of them is my wife's parents and they have HD sat. Her son love's BD's and borrows mine and rents whenever he gets the chance. The mom though never rents BD's.

Do you know anyone like this? The other person is my wifes older brother and his family. He says that it's too expensive. But the place he rents movies at charges the same price for both so why not rent the blu's?

I have 25 blus and love them but when I rent it is always on sd dvd. The reason for sd is because I rent from family video and redbox, neither of which have bds. I heard redbox's are starting to carry bd rentals for $1, hopefully my area gets them soon. And fam vidoe is the only place in my area left to not carry bds. When i graduate from college in Dec. I am planning on getting accounts from other place to take advantage fo the 50% of for new members, but w/ work fulltime and school it wound amoount to 1 or 2 rentals. So I am one of those who does not rent bds but that will change soon.

Everyone I know (outside this forum) with an HDTV with the exception of one person understands and utilizes Blu-ray. That friend is a PS3 owner, but he's in the "I've gone Blu and won't go back" family that all of us are in.

The others all stick to the "DVDs are good enough" 'argument' which still baffles me. One of my uncles will be coming around soon, though — I believe — as he recently upgraded his programming to DirecTV with one of the HD packages...So now he "gets it" although he's still not quite to the point of going for it and ditching DVD to go Blu.

So in essence, I suppose it could be said that I know "very few" people who exactly match the criteria you set forth in your OP; but as a general principle, it is true that most people with HDTVs I know do not utilize it for HD as frequently as they should.

I can't tell you the number of times I've gone over to my in laws house and they're watching a hockey or football game on their LCD, through their HD cable that they pay extra for, yet they're not watching it in HD. They say they can't see that much difference so it doesn't really occur to them to check. Absolutely kills me. It's the first thing I notice when I look at the TV. I gave up on the Blu-ray conversation a long time ago.

My parents have a 2 yr old XBR and a Sony Blu-ray player. They don't rent anything but Blu's and watch HD television almost exclusively. Basically because of me though.

I feel kind of bad for my in-laws though. They live out of town so they stay with us from time to time. They come in the city and watch blu's and HD at my house, go home and spend like $700 bucks on a Bell HD PVR for there 5-6 yr old Toshiba projo that does 720p and the pic is pathetic. We were at the cabin on the weekend and spent about 7 minutes looking for HD only to find out I was already on it.

It was brutal!

For your uncle, a trick that worked for a friend of mine is that they took their PS3 over to their friends house that was holding out {with a huge 1080p tv too} and hooked it up there and blew their socks off.

They converted and haven't looked back.

my friend i used to go to school with and his parents as well do this

they both got hdtvs, friend has a ps3 and his parents have the sony s550

they still buy only dvds and only got the ps3 for games and the s550 because they thought they couldn't use a dvd player with an hdtv

i brought transformers over one day and played it on the ps3 (46 inch sony lcd tv) and they weren't impressed at all

oh and i checked out their receiver for them....wasn't even hooked up to the S550, just to the dvd player, AND it was hooked up for stereo and not even coaxial/optical

My dad has a nice big screen Sony downstairs, but only has a DVD. However, he watches all his cable channels in HD.

Had a co-worker who bought a nice, new HDTV recently. After about a month, I asked him what he thought of the Celtics & Sox games in Hi-Def. He said he was fairly disappointed overall. When I asked what channel he set his Cable Box to, he told me the standard def channel numbers. He never upgraded his cable TV service to include hi-def programming!

I think you're being a little narrow-minded to be honest. Not everyone wants or cares for high-def movies. An HDTV can be used for more than just Blu Ray.

I agree it is strange to buy a Blu Ray player and not buy Blu Rays but it's not strange to buy an HDTV and PS3, and not buy Blu Rays.

But it is strange to rent regular DVD's over Blu-ray when the store you goto doesn't charge a premium for renting them right?

I will admit they have an older Sony player that needed a firmware update and it does load slower than the PS3 does but it's not that bad.

You're absolutely correct sir. For all of you doubters out there, spend a little time in my line of work, and you'll never question this notion again.
