Default Regular Blu-Ray vs 4K Blu-Ray

I have about 780 regular Blu-Ray copies, 4 4K Ultra HD copies, and one Blu-Ray 3D copy in my physical media collection. The main difference here is that regular Blu has a bigger 1080p resolution and 4K Blu-Ray has the 4K resolution, but has some issues. To me, I prefer regular Blu-Ray more than 4K Blu-Ray (along with Blu-Ray 3D).

Why? Have tried watching UHD on a 4K tv with HDR within 55-75 inches? I have a big 4K tv in 75 inches nearly all my 4K UHD looks very good.

I prefer UHD to blu-ray and I prefer 3D to both.

I’m not gonna lie. It took me a long time to find significant differences between hd Blu-ray and dvd in 2007-2010 when I had a 35 inch tv.

But once I got my 65’ tv a cane easily tell the difference between 4k and regular Blu-ray. It really depends on the display.

I can count on one hand how many times I have experienced playback issues on standard Blu-rays over the years, but I have experienced more freezes on 4K UHD Blu-rays on my Sony X700, although my player has all of the latest updates.
The vast majority of my 4K UHD Blu-rays play perfectly without incident, though, and, even when the freeze glitches happen, they usually play through fine if I skip back a few seconds and try the scene again.

4K UHD Blu-rays look better than the standard Blu-ray counterparts across the board to my eyes, but it is not a day-versus-night improvement like the jumps from VHS to DVD to standard Blu-ray. 4K UHD Blu-rays simply have more "oomph" to them.

The improvement in picture quality with 4K UHD Blu-rays comes with a disclaimer in my eyes, though. I have noticed with a handful of older well-loved movies that 4K UHD Blu-rays look more "sound stage" with regard to lighting, although I watch all of my movies with the cinema frame rate instead of "soap opera" frame rate. I have also noticed that a couple of 1970s drive-in type movies look a bit too vibrantly colorful on 4K UHD Blu-ray, but that is a case-by-case thing.

While my 55” 4k TV shows both Blu-ray and 4k discs well, It’s easy to see how someone might have the opinion of the OP. I remember family members who LOVED movies thinking DVDs were “as good as Blu-ray” a decade ago. What changed was that both of them had eye issues which glasses fixed and proved the superiority of Blu-ray discs. The jump from DVD to Blu-ray was huge but the jump to 4k is even “bigger” but you definitely need a larger than 50” TV (the larger the better) to experience 4k at its best.

The jump from vhs to dvd was incredible to experience in so many ways. OAR, dolby digital and dts sound mixes, bonus features, discs instead of bulky tapes, no manual rewinding of tapes, no degredation of product with each play, etc. The LD format only had around a 1% market share at its peak and so most people never used it; sure, some folks on enthusiast/hobby forums like this might be the exception. But around 99% of the home video market was going from vhs right into dvd and it was just a jaw dropping experience back then even among average joes.

Anyone could witness the benefits and convenience advantages immediately regardless of if you had a 19" tv or 52" tv in the earlier days. Even a composite video connection to a smaller tv, dvd would still look superior to vhs. Blu to uhd is going to be a much less incremental jump for the average person and generally will be rewarded with much larger and better quality displays. Budget 4k tvs may not do uhd justice.
