Cool Sony stops netflix from playing there movies on xboxlive

Check this out
Quote:
A week ago, I started watching “An Evening With Kevin Smith 2″ through the Netflix streaming service on my Xbox 360 but didn’t finish. Now, I can’t watch the rest.

Joystiq broke word this evening that Netflix stopped Xbox 360 users from streaming movies distributed by Sony Pictures Entertainment.

This restriction only applies to Xbox 360 users. PC, Mac and other Netflix-enabled on-demand devices can still stream Sony Pictures Entertainment films, and is not a glitch.

“In the case of Xbox 360, a few hundred titles are temporarily unavailable to be streamed via the Xbox game console,” Netflix VP of corporate communications Steve Swasey told MTV Multiplayer in an e-mailed statement tonight. “Those titles are still available to be watched on subscribers’ computers and on TVs via other partner devices, and we hope they’ll be licensed for Xbox 360 shortly.”

When asked if the license just coincidentally expired as Microsoft was adding Netflix support or Sony Pictures Entertainment specifically requested Xbox 360 streaming to be disabled, Swasey wouldn’t say.

“As watching instantly becomes a more prominent part of the Netflix service, our goal is to have all of our streaming content licensed for all of our partner devices,” he said. “We’re doing well in this area, but it will take some time before we fully achieve that goal. Today, titles regularly come in and out of license and there is a natural ebb and flow to what we have on license at any given point in time.”

For now, however, Sony Pictures Entertainment films available for streaming through Netflix — including “Superbad,” “We Own The Night” and others — will remain blocked on Xbox 360, until Sony says otherwise.

All i have to say is......LOL.

Its about time sony fights back with something, they been standing there doing nothing letting MS take everything from them.

It gets better, here's from the original story:

Quote:
Update: We've found a common thread! All of the affected titles from our Queue are distributed by Columbia Pictures. Columbia Pictures, of course, is owned by Sony Pictures Entertainment, a subsidiary of Microsoft rival Sony. Case closed?

Oddly enough, Sony Picture Entertainment movies (listed here) are still Xbox-enabled.

Update 2: It appears that the sudden yoinking of Columbia Pictures films from NXE Instant Queue access is a licensing issue with Sony after all. MTV Multiplayer pinged us with word that, on the rental service's official blog, Netflix corp. communications VP Steve Swasey writes:
Only a portion of Sony's (overall, not just sony) movies are affected, which are the Columbia Pictures portion.

That is AWSOME! lol The Ps3 should get NetFlix! The download times and prices have made me stop buying from the Playstation store... I would just rather buy the BD when it goes on sale or from amazon for $20 then rent in HD for $7.

You know what the funny thing is? I'll bet that if the shoe were on the other foot and MS was withholding some shit to Sony, all the blogs would be praising MS for making such a smart move.

I hate the blogosphere so much. It singlehandedly ruined professional journalism.

As someone with a BA in Journalism, I'll disagree. "Journalists" killed true journalism. Look no further than the election coverage this time around. Agenda rules the day.

Anyway, as for the news, that's funny.

If Sony gets Netflix for the PS3 I wonder if M$osft would throw around money to do the same thing (hmm, throw money at Universal and Paramount).

The best thing Sony can do though is keep BLU drives away from Xbox machines.

That's just a clerical error, SPE movies will be removed in time as well.

This is not the last we have heard from the Netflix streaming though. Let's just say that Netflix were incredibly stupid to pick a fight with a company that owns a major studio.

If PSN doesn't get Netflix streaming sometime in the next year, expect Sony to retaliate. Their move could potentially put Netflix out of business or at least in serious trouble.

I remember telling people at Netflix that it was always better to side with the company that owned a massive movie studio, regardless how much the other side were willing to pay (lots of cash up front). If Netflix don't buy themselves out of the stupid exclusivity contract it could sink the company...

Wait, what? Will Sony Pictures really torpedo Netflix over their Xbox Live streaming deal? I know they can't be happy about it, but that seems like strongarm tactics (and in any case, does Sony even have a Netflix-capable infrastructure in the PS3 to put in place in short order?).

Of course, it's perfectly within their rights to do so, I suppose...

All's fair in love and war! There's definately no love lost, and it's a console war, so sounds to me like all's fair.

If Microsoft wants to pay for exclusives cutting Sony out the deal, I think it's only fair that Sony doesn't allow their content to be used. Payback is a *****.

I think it is a message to the community at large not to mess with them any more. Publishers know Sony have messed it up bigtime with PS3, but by the same token they know PS4 is going to be a massive success, all of the groundwork laid down by Sony during this gen isn't going to pay off until the next one.

We are now entering the third year of the PS3, it is going to be a massive year in 2009 with a huge number of blockbuster games, but we are also reaching the halfway point now. In November 2009 we will have gone past it, and Sony will start gearing up for PS4 release internally and design specs will start to be formulated, a year later some will leak to the press, a year later it will be announced at E3 or TGS, and a year later it will be released.

No $599 price, no expensive drive, no chip R&D, cheap off the shelf GPU, cheap unified RAM, we are looking at a $299 launch price.

Sony are just letting everyone know that they will be back next gen, and any publisher who crosses them in this gen will pay dearly next gen.

Edit: Also in this case, rental income for SPE isn't all that great, and Netflix doesn't contribute that much to the bottom line, so for them to pull everything from Netflix, and I mean everything, wouldn't be that damaging to Sony, but it would probably sink Netflix to lose 10,000 titles from their library.

Smile Good move by Sony

Why should Netflix sign a exclusive contract with Microsoft and still use sony movies to attract potential customers. Let them pay more for the movies or not at all.

I applaud Sony on this move. This is like when Sony sponsor the WWE and the developers for the game opt not to release on Sony's console.

Yay and double Yay! I hope they reward the developers that have stood by them with the PS3 making excellent games for us to enjoy without giving us watered down second hand crap that was made for another system. Make the developers that shafted Sony have to grovel to come back when the PS4 smashes whatever MS makes next gen.

People don't realise that the Blu-ray and Cell/XDR cost $540 when PS3 launched. Next time around Blu-ray cost will be negligible, Cell costs are already done, and DDR5 RAM is more likely than XDR2 unless Rambus cut their royalty fees massively. What cost $540 last time will be closer to $150 this time, which leaves $200 for everything else like a GPU and cooling etc...

All I can say is, keep the user upgradable hard drive, but add user upgradable RAM, and a way for the game OS to actually access more. This is vital if they plan to keep the option for Linux. Would also be nice if they could include a formatting program that gives the option to expand the size of the formatted partitions. It's a wonderfully powerful system for computing other then a severe lack of RAM (and the issue with direct access to the GPU, but I program non GUI stuff).
