Criterion Scorsese Shorts (1963-1978)

Quote:
This compilation of five early short films by Martin Scorsese offers a fascinating window onto his artistic development. Spanning the years from Scorsese’s time at NYU in the mid-1960s to the late ’70s, when he was emerging as one of the era’s most electrifying talents, Scorsese Shorts centers on the intimate home movie Italianamerican—a loving snapshot of the director’s parents—and American Boy, a freewheeling portrait of a larger-than-life raconteur. Also included are The Big Shave, a daringly visceral response to America’s involvement in Vietnam, and the bracing student films What’s a Nice Girl Like You Doing in a Place Like This? and It’s Not Just You, Murray! Touching on many of Scorsese’s key themes—Italian American identity, family, his beloved New York City—these are hilarious, candid, and illuminating works from the preeminent American filmmaker of our time.

The documentary itself is only 49 minutes long so I'm guessing Criterion will be pairing it with another Scorsese film...I'm guessing either After Hours or Mean Streets

I'm thinking Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore since it doesn't have a blu-ray release yet.

There was a Voyager laserdisc called Three By Scorsese. It had Italianamerican, The Big Shave, and American Boy. Could be a reissue of that.

Really hope that it is paired with the extraordinary "American Boy: A Profile Of Steven Prince."

Scorsese mentions Criterion having "Italianmerican" at 23:10 of this interview:

My guess is Mean Streets, but I'd love to see Alice get a release as well.

ItalianAmerican is an extra on the French Carlotta Mean Streets Blu-ray. Well worth watching too.

More Scorsese is a good thing. Gonna get this, as I've never seen these shorts before.

My mom ADORES ItalianAmerican!

She has the VHS so for her to be able to see this in beautiful restored picture quality will be a plus (even on DVD)!

I found my Mother's Day gift.

What an incredible release!! "Italianamerican" and "American Boy" are two of his best films IMO. Cannot wait for this one.

I went looking for a link to prove "Street Scenes 1970" never screens and has never been released, and instead I found out it's on Youtube!

It used to be on YouTube last year (SlashFilm, The Film Stage, Documentary News all wrote about it), but Scorsese filed a copyright claim against it so it’s no longer on there (still out there though.)

Will be getting this during the Criterion sale.

I'm guessing the price will be within the $100-$150 range?

SRP is $40 so it’ll be $20 come flash sale and B&N sales.

These are short films. Three are shorts he made in film school, and two are hour long documentaries. So, it's not a 150.00 set or anything.

It's the price of a standard Criterion movie.

I have all of these in various forms, but I'll love to see them on blu ray. I saw all of them, with "Street Scenes", on a college campus in the early 90s, as a presentation called, "Six by Scorsese". Got to see them all projected on 16 mm film. I think they're all on Youtube, too.

It's great to have an official, restored release of them. They are immensely entertaining.

This is great news. I've been wanting to see American Boy, after I learned that the adrenaline injection scene in Pulp Fiction was inspired by one of the stories told in that. The other shorts/docus should be good too.

It's Not Just You, Murray is a lot of fun. The first two minutes alone has you hooked. Funny and stylistic that really captures early Scorsese.

Also, the subject, Steven Prince, is the gun salesman in "Taxi Driver", too.

Yes, the "Pulp Fiction" scene is almost exactly like a story Prince tells. He is a natural storyteller. My fave of his involves a desert gas station at night. (You'll see). Prince tells his tales so vividly, you often feel like you've SEEN them.

Note an appearance by George Memmoli, the "We don't pay mooks" guy from "Mean Streets".
