Cool Forbiddent Planet: Prequel, sequel, or remake.

Simply on a whim I searched www.imdb.com for information on Forbidden Planet. Supposedly a new one is coming out in 2010. Thus probably the reason why we have yet to see this fine sci-fi on blu-ray. Wasn't it out on HD (coff) DVD?

I read a December 2008 article that it was supposed to be a prequel. Then a March 2009 article claims the script was leaked and thus scrapped. So, is this a prequel or not? Should it be a re-make? A re-make with sequel?

After the disaster with "Day the Earth Stood Still" my only hope for doing this film is to have James Cameron involved. DO NOT SCREW WITH ROBBY the ROBOT!

Last I heard, they where going to do a trilogy of films with the first one based on the original colony, followed by the remake. God knows what the third one would be about and I do not know if this info is accurate anymore or if it was.

No need to "coff/cough" yes it is on HD-DVD and it looked and sounded great the last time i watched it; 1080p is 1080p. I'm sure at some point it will be released on blu-ray (notice i didn't "coff") and i'm sure it will look and sound just as good as it did on HD-DVD. I think this is one of those classics that should be left alone. the movie makers need to move on to something new and stop trying to make remakes and in some cases prequels. Don't get me wrong, some prequels have been very good, look at what star trek did, batman begins. I think it will be hard to make a prequel to this classic; to do that, i think it must start out with the Krell destroying themselves as a result of the technology they created then, the settlers with Morphious and his daughter finding the planet and then what happens to them. it should end with the starship search team heading out to the planet to investigate it and it should end there, imo!

I would love to own the original in Blu, and I am really hoping for a remake.

why is it taking so damn long for a blu-ray release? I hope we don't get the same encode as the hd-dvd version.....I want something better like a high bit-rate avc version with dts-hdma audio with as many extras as they can muster.

LETS HAVE IT ALREADY!!!!! DAMN IT!!!!

How hard is it to put this one on Blu? all they have to do is port over the HD-DVD transfer.

<Slaps the red Kool-aid cup out of your hand.> You'll thank me later.

One thing we hate around here is HD DVD ports. I have a number of WB movies ported from 30GB HD DVD. I have to admit, not too shabby. But a port over does not a blu-ray make. The 15GB ports are horrible. They ruined "The Polar Express" with that crap.

Why the hell is it taking so long to get this freakin great film. Leslie Neilson is so damn young compared to all the paradies he does these days.

Bad idea on a remake. The original is great. They need to quit remaking the classics. I mean sure they re-made/re-booted Batman and it was a good idea. They wanted to go in a different direction. If you have a movie or a series that you want to go in a different direction fine. But to remake a classic. There is nothing to remake/reboot in Forbidden Planet.

The remake of "The Day the Earth Stood Still" was silly. It was nowhere near as good as the original. I liked the twist on the plot (saving Earth from the humans). But why not make something fresh with the plot instead of humping a classics leg.

Nonsense.

What about a reboot like Star Trek or Dark Knight? Considering how fantastic those movies were, if the studio can have a great script, cast and storyline than I am all for it. If they are going to reboot/remake this classic, I hope they do it right.

The problem with remakes and reboots is the chances of success are 50%. In the case of the original Hulk movie it almost "smashed" the franchise before the Hulk had a chance to burst out of his skivies. Ang Lee was given the project for being such a brilliant director for Broke Back Mountain. He was well suited for that movie, but simply could not capture the soul of the Hulk. C'mon, he wasted millions of dollars on CGI so we can watch Hulk jump through the desert. The job was too big for him.

Directors all have different styles and are better at directing certain types of movies. Want relentless action? Michael Bay. Would the Terminator franchise be such a hugh success without the vision of James Cameron directing the first two? As we can see from the last two movies, no one can adequately fill his shoes.

Directors have a mutual admiration society. They are completely unable to tell each other, "You suck at directing romance. Stick to horror." Or what ever the case may be. They bite their filthy rich tongues and let "their friends" make failures and jackass'es of themselves. The movie going public suffers, and thus kills off dozens of potentially great franchises.

My favorite Sci Fi film if I had to choose one.

I didn't like the remake of War of the Worlds and The Day the Earth Stood Still wasn't a distinct pleasure, either.

They keep trying to up the ante, adding all kinds of explosions and creepy aspects. Those originals were not really horror films, but the remakes seemed to think they had to add murder to all the mayhem.

I will certainly be leary of a remake of this because they seem to suck the charm and sometimes whimsy right out of what was in the originals.

One of the greatest sci-fi films ever, and I'm sure they'll screw it up cuz that's what they do. I wish they would release the original on blu though.

I am no fan of Tom Cruise, but I am a great fan of BOTH WotW movies. Perhaps it was because I had zero pre-exposure to the new movie. It just wowed me. While most of you wished Dakota's Fanning would be soon killed in this film, I felt it was her place to be there. What is worse than a father and his teen son arguing while running away from a world wide threat? Having a screaming little girl to add to the confusion. Having the son Robby survive to the end of the movie was something I couldn't understand. Sure, it was a happy ending, but it lost a touch of realism. He should have died at the explosion at the front line.

Day the Earth Stood still continues to get low marks on Amazon and averages a mere 2.5 stars with hundreds of votes. With that said, I kept a very open mind and consider it a very likable 3 star film. What can I say, GORT saved the movie. The included HD original sweetened the deal so I bought the blu-ray.

Forbidden Planet deserves a killer blu-ray release. What could be better than sitting in a dark room and enjoying the glow of the ID monster caught in the electric field fence on your plasma or LCD TV?

I think the movie was ruined by Hollywood. I bought it just so I could get the original on Blu, I watched the remake once which was more than enough.

apart from being a really bad movie, Jaden Smith really ruined that movie....I shudder to the idea of him being the next karate kid....
