Your Suggestions for new Special features in BD-DVD-4k

So I'm a little tired of seeing always the same special features. 1 or several audio commentaries, a couple of video essays, if we're lucky, and a documentary, and a few deleted scenes. How can we spice up this cocktail?

a few of my ideas without any self-filtering, which means there's a real possibility that some of these are crap:

1/ a for vs against. One critic makes a case for the movie, and another who didnt like the movie, gives their reasons. This could be a personal thing, but I enjoy reading well-articulated criticisms of movies I like.

2/ favorite moments: several critics pick their favorite moments of that movie and explain why.

3/ how did it fare? a look back at how that movie was received, box office numbers, spectators reactions, critics consensus, etcetera

4/ FAQ about the plot: Remember the IMDB forums where everyone was shocked to find out that certain actress or actor have aged and dont look like they remembered anymore? well it also was good to find out all the things you didnt get about the plot. This would serve the same purpose.

5/ the movie on the net: an exploration of comments on social media, pages dedicated to that movie, etcetera

6/ trivia and prizes: make something fun and interactive with prizes.


those are a few, obviously not polished seed of ideas, what are yours?

I always liked the idea of "Video Commentaries" (as seen on the Goonies SE Blu-ray). A small on-screen window of the participants reacting to their scenes.

I'm also tired of boring talking head interviews. I'd like see real documentaries with hosts make a comeback. Interviews are fine but do a roundtable type of thing where everyone is on camera, not just the subject(s). Kind of like a Charlie Rose thing.

I'd like to see Q&A's featuring fans of the film throwing questions to the cast and crew. Perfect opportunity to find out stuff straight from the horse's mouth.

How about glitch-free 4K discs that are playable across all standardized players? During the last couple of years, I've bought-in to this new(ish) tech. The playback problems are relentless, and I'm seeing sparse returns on my investment. In other words, most of the time, I'm only seeing a mild uptick in PQ. And the audio? Just set up a new 5.1 system over Thanksgiving, and I'm pleased with all the audio options. But it wouldn't make me or break me to have fewer options, so long as they sounded good upon playback.

There's plenty of discs that I'll always refuse to part with, but this episode of My A/V Journey Through Time brings me closer and closer to that "mostly streaming these days" edge.

It'd be cool to have interactive stuff like sets from the movie where you could click on things and there'd be a short tidbit on how they designed that thing.

I like this idea too.

I just feel no company is really making an effort when it comes to extras. For an artistic medium Im always surprised at how unimaginative most film related matters are.

Is there anything less creative than the film and tv awards?

I've ranted about this in another thread and got slapped in the face for it. Apparently we are in the minority and most people have no problems with the 4K format...

I've heard that DVD had some cool stuff like that. I watched a video showing the disc menu of The Abyss DVD and it was really cool.

This week I've received two DVDs that make you jump though hoops to see the special features. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is one, and Memento: Limited Edition is the other. I really hope that this isn't going to become a popular trend with DVDs, because it's damn annoying.

Both discs in this set feature menus set up like a series of psychological tests. On disc one, they show you a series of words, and you must click on the ones that they did not see in order to access the Commentary, Scene Selection, Set Up, and the Movie itself. This isn't that bad compared to the second disc, especially since one of the little cards that comes in the packaging shows you what you need to click on in order to see the movie.

Disc two is probably one of the most frustrating and annoying DVD experiences yet. It's even more annoying to try to access the extras on this DVD than it is on the Harry Potter disc. The menus are structured just like the ones on disc one, only instead of clicking on words you need to click on small pictures.

Once you click on one that works, you are taken to a series of psychological questions. Depending on what picture you clicked on, and depending on what you answer through the course of the questions, you'll be taken to a different extra or even back to the main menu.

I'm sure there will be some elitists out there who are going to think that this presentation of extras is brilliant. Sure, it does fit with the theme of the movie, but if you have to do so much work to view the hidden features on the DVD, they are actually more like Easter Eggs.

Go ahead. Send the hate mail, but I don't want to spend a half hour digging through menu questions just to look at a poster or a short featurette. If there were at least some sort of shortcut directly to the extras you want to see, then I wouldn't have a problem with it. But to make you jump through hoops just to view some special features isn't fun, it's just frustrating and annoying.

I own it and don't recall ever bothering trying to dig through it to find all the special features. Like the reviewer said, a menu should be functional not an exercise in frustration.

Oh that's interesting. I'd never heard of that before but it certainly sounds like it would be a pain to navigate.

1 does not make sense (why would anyone connected to the movie want someone to be bashing it.

2-3 sound interesting

4-6 sound like BD-live features if I understand them correctly and BD-live is dead and I doubt anyone wants to revive it.
