When using my ps3 in an enclosed space, the fan tends to get a bit loud. I purchased a notebook cooling mat that powers through the USB port to try to keep it cool at all times. How do you guys keep the ps3 fan from going into loud mode?

I took mine apart and replaced the thermal paste with some higher quality stuff, that made a HUGE difference...although I don't know if I'd risk it no a healthy system (mine had broken so I had nothing to lose
![]() Apart from that, keep it in a more ventilated area if possible, or turn up the volume. As long as your PS3 isn't auto-shutting off from overheating, the noise is the only problem. |

I have mine sitting vertically and pretty well vented on the top, back, and front. Whenever I do notice the fan kicking up a lot, I take the vaccuum to it.
Interestingly, I notice the fan running more when playing DVD content as opposed to Blu-Ray stuff. |

I don't have that problem when it is out in an open area. I used it the other day for a few hours and never heard the fan kick up to a level where it was too loud. The space I have it on in my stand is well ventilated on the fan side but it still gets a bit loud. Just wanted to know if others have been successful using the same method I'm using.

My nephew has his in an enclosed space. It's a regular tv stand with glass doors on the front. He left the rear cover off (the cardboard stuff that you nail on) He also has a laptop cooling pad under it blowing towards the rear and out of the console. I believe it kicks the fan up to high speed, but we can't really hear it since it's in a console with glass doors.
![]() When I get mine, I will probably do something similar- I may get a higher power cooling pad that plugs into the wall. I might mount it above the PS3 (on the shelf above it) directing the heated air to the rear out of the console. |

Keeping it in a vertical position used to work for me but I noticed it would still get loud after a while. It's loud for me playing any content. I know there is no way around it, but I used to blast a fan so it would cool down and it worked so that's why I decided to get the cooling mat.

I recently moved mine from a horizontal position to a vertical, do to the fact that I needed the space. I notice that UPright it makes a ton more noise then when it was lying down. of course now it's summer-time and I don't have central air, so my HT room gets pretty friggin' hot. I think I could bill it as the Home Theatre Sauna.

I'm surprised that more people have never tried this method of using a notebook cooling mat.

I was looking for something like that but could not find a similar fan. Where did you get yours? Nice looking setup by the way.

Mine does upscale both DVDs and PS1/PS2 games. However, would that necessarily tax the system any harder than when I play .AVI or .MP4 videos in fullscreen, etc.? Because that doesn't seem to generate much heat at all.

No idea...but I concur that ours does the same seemingly only when playing DVDs.

I use the stuff from www.coolerguys.com also. I put one right behind the PS3 where the air blows out. I never hear the fan on my PS3. Get a couple extra thermal controllers if you have more than one compartment to cool.
