Default Best Audio Demo DVD or BD?

Hello Blu-ray.com members,

I can see there are quite a lot of audio enthusiasts here so I was hoping to get some information on some really good music DVD or Blu-ray discs that could showcase high quality speakers.

I would prefer titles with a 5.1 track in DTS (or HD audio if in Blu-ray format).

Any recommendations? Also, if you do have a recommendation, which track/s in particular stand out?

A couple that I use regularly is Layla from the Eric Clapton - Live in Hyde Park DVD and also a few tracks from The Eagles - Hell Freezes Over DVD. They both bring any (good) speaker to life but I need more variety.

Definitely Eagles' Hotel California on the HFO dvd - a few more of my favorites with great mix include

Rush - R30 - 30th Anniversary Deluxe Edition
Nine Inch Nails Live - Beside You in Time
Roy Orbison - Black & White Night
Los Lonely Boys - Texican Style (Live from Austin)
Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble - Live at the El Mocambo
An Evening with the Dixie Chicks
Elton 60: Live at Madison Square Garden
Carlos Santana - Plays Blues at Montreux 2004
Bob Marley & The Wailers: Exodus - Live at the Rainbow (30th Anniversary Edition)

Hi Shinrai!

I have 28 Concert BD's, many of which were reviewed on this site. So have a browse through them and see if there are any that may be of interest to you.

Thank you! I use the Hotel California clip on Hell Freezes over almost every time. The acoustic intro is fantastic. You should check out Layla on Eric Clapton Live at Hyde Park, it has a similar style... Acoustic solo intro blended into a great song. Both of these have sold many speakers for me!

I will definitely be checking out the others you recommended.

Queen Rock Montreal BD - Want to show off your surround capabilities? Check out "Now I'm Here" and the reprise a couple of tracks later. Want to show off the bottom end of your system? Go to the drum and typiany solo. All in all, this disc has everything, including some of the best tunes recorded.

Diana Krall: Live in Paris DVD - The ambience and sense of "being there" is great. I heard that this disc is one that a lot of professionals use to calibrate audio systems as well.

John Fogerty: The Long Road Home in Concert DVD - Great tunes and they really sound magnificant. The DTS track is one of the best.

I have that Queen on DVD and wasn't too impressed with the DTS mix - maybe the BD is better
Diana Krall is on my list to purchase - heard good things about it and John Fogerty - I didn't realize it had a DTS track on it - will have to check it out too

Wow. Really? This the first I'm hearing of someone being disappointed in the audio of the DVD. The BD sounds a little bit better, but it's not a night and day difference. The extra clarity and range is there to be sure though. You're sure it's the Queen Rock Montreal DVD you have?

If you don't like the DTS mix, the PCM stereo sounds amazing as well. Some prefer that to the DTS, but personally the sense of ambience and surround effects with the DTS make it preferred for me.

Yep that's the one, I now generally listen to it 7.1 using the PCM with the Dolby Pro Logic IIx on my receiver - I don't know the DTS mix just didn't sound right to me - Oh well....

One that's great that hasn't been mentioned is The Moody Blues Lovely To See You......the only thing it's missing is an orchestra other than that it's perfect.

I have that one too. It was shot on video and it doesn't look good at all, but the DTS sound is pretty decent.

The quality of the Montreal concert is incredible. It was the first concert shot in 35mm and professionally mixed upon its release. Looks like you have another BD to buy!

Pulse by Pink Floyd is a great reference dvd for audio and David Gilmour: A Night to Remember is a fantastic BD.

Highly recommend both

Default A couple of recommendations

Heart - "Alive in Seattle" I've never been a big Heart fan, but Ann and Nancy put on a great show. PQ and SQ is very good.

2007 Crossroads Festival - I really wish this was available in blu ray. Still, the SQ is really good and there are some great performances, especially Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks.

"The Last Waltz"

Bonnaroo Festival DVD's. The 2004 with the Hill Country Review is good.

IMO the best DVD hands down is The Eagles Farewell Tour. The sound will blow you away and for DVD it is Reference PQ. It's jaw dropping stuff!!

Another BD that has great acoustic work is John Mayer: Where the Light Is. He does an acoustic version of Free Fallin' that is great! Check it out!

I say this time and time again, but it's worth repeating. Chris Botti: Live with Orchestra and Friends has some of the most amazing audio I've ever heard. As crisp as audio can be.
