Default Onkyo 805 or 806?

Is there a big difference between the the two?

Which one is better

As far as straight up power output, the 805 delivers 50% more clean power than that of the 806.

Anyways soundwise the 806 isn't even in the same league as the 805 which is considered possibly the most bang for buck AVR ever made.

same thing applies to the 805
everyone that has said the 805 is better is either
A) a current 805 owner
B) was an 805 owner in the past

so whats REALLY good

Don,

I'm not an owner, but the numbers show there is a drop in power.

Advantage TX-SR805

The 805 will not process 24/192 Dolby TrueHD.
The 806 will process 24/192 Dolby TrueHD.
Bitstream: Advantage TX-SR806
PCM: Advantage neither

The 805 processes DSD directly to analog or to PCM for processing
The 806 processes DSD to PCM regardless of setting

The 805 has 60A High Instantaneous Current Capability
The 806 has 36A High Instantaneous Current Capability
Advantage TX-SR805

The 805 doesn't have bridging for front speakers for 2.1 listening
The 806 does have bridging for front speakers to 210W/ch (8Ω) for 2.1
Advantage TX-SR806

I think the 805 has better power, although the missing BTL capability did bother me, but for $614 new I couldn't pass up the 805. I listen to a lot of SACD's with the Oppo 980H that has DSD output, so I wanted DSD>Analog too which the xx6 series don't have.

The 5 HDMI inputs is pretty kick ass, but I only have three devices right now that I use for HDMI. If I were to add a standalone Blu-ray player for bitstreaming, I'd go component for my satellite dish.
i love the 806 with its multiple hdmi inputs.
if i want even more power i will by an emotiva amp

ill take the hdmi inputs & higher

When auditioning multiple AVRs, someone would know. I had just received my 805 when I decided to head over to CC one last time to listen to the 806 to see if I could tell the difference. The difference in sound quality was substantial. Yes, same speakers were hooked up to the 806. Different listening environment, yes, but doesn't mean you can't tell where the 806 gets muddied and the 805 doesn't with it's power output.

And granted, you can get an Emotiva or other external amp for the 806, but the 805 is already putting out the equivalent power of an Emotiva UPA-7. Sure the 805 may not be as efficient in doing so, but the power is still there in dynamic peaks if needed.

What about if someone bought an 805 because of what they'd read about it vs. the 806?

I did my research before purchasing my 805- especially when combined with the PS3 that is sending out audio PCM, which nullifies most of the 806's strengths.

*edit* It doesn't make the 806 any less of a great machine, but if you're comparing the two directly they basically took out raw power to add in a few features and keep it at the same price point. I am actually holding off purchasing an amp because I've found that my 805 can more than push my setup.

Agree 1000% and we in the same boat about holding off from getting an amp.
I have been waiting on someone else to try it first

I have the 805 and have looked at the 806. I believe The only real difference is the HDMI in puts and outputs. I think the 806 has one or two more. and maybe some other inputs. Oh the power (rms and peak) I think is a bit higher. You can go to www.onkyo.com and look them up, and see for your self. Hope this helps.

The weight difference alone, leads me to believe the 805 is built better.

805. The 806 doesn't have the Burr Brown Dac's,and it's built differently.
