Default Carefull when using debit cards

Just to alert everyone. My co worker went to Walmart last week. She had her items rung up by the cashier. The cashier hurried
her along and didn't give her a receipt. She asked the cashier for a receipt and
the cashier was annoyed and gave it to her. My co worker didn't look at her
receipt until later that night. The receipt showed that she asked for $20 cash
back. SHE DID NOT ASK FOR CASH BACK.. My co worker called Walmart who
investigated but could not see the cashier pocket the money. She then called her
niece who works for the bank and her niece told her this. There is a scam going
on. The cashier will ask for cash back and hand it to her friend who is the next
person in line. Please, Please , please check your receipts right
away when using debit cards. The store has the cashier under investigation now.
We can only pray that she is caught very soon.

I am adding to this. My husband and I were in WalMart
North Salisbury and paying with credit card when my husband went to sign the
credit card signer he just happen to notice there was a $20 cash back added.
He told the cashier that he did not ask nor want cash back and she said
this machine has been messing up and she canceled it

Just posting take it for what its worth I got this email today.

People complain when I don't leave the register after buying because I'm double checking my receipt to make sure that the cashier did not scan a item twice.

Anyway I have no problem since I'm always on top of my finances. I'm always checking my accts online to make sure there's no other transactions etc.

I'd like to add: WM hires stupid associates anyway.

This is another reason I use the self-checkout at Wal-Mart. I've got a Target opening up across the street from Wal-Mart in a couple weeks so I'll probably stop going to Wal-Mart anyways, although this could happen at any store. I also don't spend enough money usually to not notice $20 tacked on to the total.

I would complain too. I'm all for checking over a receipt, but it's best to step to the side and check it, instead of holding the line up. If it's 10 items, no big deal, but I've waited in line before at a supermarket while someone scanned over an arm-length sized receipt. So annoying.

Here's the Snopes link.

Remember, if you get something really important forwarded to you via email it doesn't take long to check it in Snopes to see if it really needs to be posted.

For the last decade like probably everyone else I've been using my debit card for more and more purchases. This last 2 years I've been getting cash more and more. It's a pain, got to go to the ATM get the cash but there is just too many of these little scam going with debit cards.

The worst places are the little corner stores, so easy for them to scam customers using the debit cards.

this is one of those stupid chain emails created by some jagoff looking to instill paranoia in middle aged females and insipid men all over the internet. I wouldn't worry too much about this. Why doesnt someone just send out an email warning everyone that they're going to die one day? That would shock me!

edit: posted this before I saw the Snopes link. I cant believe people still believe these ridiculous chain emails. All they want to do is scare you and make you afraid to step outside of your damn house.

I hate to continue a thread started on a bunk forward, but:

Debit cards have all the risks of credit cards, but none of the protection.

If your credit card has fraudulent charges you can usually get those funds back. With a debit card, once the money is gone its gone.

The smart thing to do is use a credit card, and pay off the balance before the end of the month from your checking account. You'll improve your credit, get rewards points, and have fraud protection*.

* If you aren't diciplined enough to pay off the card, then this doesn't work.

A cashier once forgot to give me my cash back. I didn't realize it until I got home. I went back and had to wait for them to count down the register to get my money. What a hassle.
Just yesterday it happened again, but this time I caught it right away.

I do the credit card thing as well and pay it like twice a month or more online, a few simple clicks. I just use it like a debit card, really.

in the past someone did get my debit card info and they did give me the money back because it was third party the bank was using who lost the info to begin with.

That's exactly what I've been doing for the last few years. Include a wedding, honeymoon, home remodel, a move, and just paying my bills and Cabela's has given me a brand new Glock 17 and Glock 19 for my trouble.

interesting, I got jacked once before but I called the bank immediately before the charge processed and they kept it in "pending" mode for like 2 weeks and just took it off then. I guess timing makes all the difference

I usually run it as credit because I don't want someone looking over my shoulder for my PIN.

I would never use a debit card in a foreign country. Way too easy for fraud to occur and it's a lot harder to dispute the charges and get your money back.

I work for a bank, I am not only on top of my account, I know the people who would correct and investigate something like this, so luckily I have little to worry about in every losing money this way. Otherwise, if I didn't work for a bank, this would really scare me.
