In terms of what Sony have out there right now (06/21/2007), the STR-DA5200ES is currently their top of the line until the other two models that I mentioned above are out! ![]() |

The 805 will upscale to 1080i, the model above that (875 and 905) will upscale to 1080p. That is only big difference I can think of. I have the Sony 5200ES and so far Im very happy with it. I also did some research and recommended my friend's mom to buy the Onkyo when she was thinking about upgrading her home stereo due to budget constraints. So, if your TV does not output 1080p or you have other sources of upscaling (for TV or other things besides DVD), then Onkyo is the one for you. Otherwise, I would hold off till Sony's new models come out, or get the Onkyo 875 when it comes out this month. Read the cnet review on the 805 and it gives details on other models that are coming out. http://reviews.cnet.com/av-receivers...tag=prod.txt.2
Personally, I will be waiting on Sony's new models, then I can just give my old one to my folks and get that other one ![]() |

i was leaning to the Sony but am opting for the Onkyo. The 5200ES scaling is pretty bad. Also, the Sony's tend to be a little power shy when running full steam. Not only that, the Sony does not have HDMI 1.3. So why limit yourself? Might as well get the latest one.
I am looking at the Onkyo 875/905 as well as the Denon 3808/4308 models. Unfortunately, while Denon promised HQV upscaling chips, they are using the inferior Faroudja scalers. Not only that, the Denon seems to be about 15lbs lighter, which usually means a smaller transformer or less power reserves. I was using a Denon receiver but it was not compatible with the PS3 (the DD decoder was clipping) and am now using an Onkyo. They sound completely different. The Onkyo has a better sound stage and imaging but the Denon seems to be more sterile or flat. Also, the Onkyo has better reserves than the Denon. The Denon could be easily driven to clipping and the Onkyo could get louder before it clipped. My concern right now is that Denon is supposed to release their new models in July but there has been no info on them. |
