Default Guillermo del Toro could have Directed Thor

Quote:
Director Guillermo del Toro has lots of projects in the works, including "At the Mountains of Madness," "Jekyll and Hyde," "The Strain," "Frankenstein" and of course "The Hobbit" prequels. And while he is still considering "Hellboy 3," he said that it probably won't happen since Ron Perlman doesn't want to wear the Hellboy suit anymore.

Del Toro now reveals to MTV News that his list of movies could have been very different, if he accepted the job to helm the upcoming "Thor" movie. He said that he was very close to taking the job, which would have been instead of "The Hobbit."

"They approached me for 'Thor,'" said del Toro. "And for a long time we talked about that, because the mythology and the images were very attractive to me. I'm a fan of [Jack] Kirby and the power he has, and I'm a fan of the original mythology. So I thought we could go back to the original mythology a lot. I love Loki, I think he's a great figure."

The job eventually went to Kenneth Branagh and del Toro signed on to helm "The Hobbit" prequels.

From what I've heard about Brannagh, I'm pretty stoked that he's directing it. But Guillermo would've been awesome as well, in a different way

I would love to see a Hellboy 3 but if Perlmen isn't down then it shouldn't be done.

The Hobbit>Thor and it's not even close so this doesn't bother me at all.

your kidding right? Hellboy movies are awesome

As for GTD having directed it, i'll reserve judgement till i see the other directors version but feel GDT has more interacttion with weird gothic, medieval, fantasy, arcane style films

Don't know if he could pull Thor off as well if that's where his talent lies but we'll see, maybe he could branch out to a different mythoilogy & look as he is a very talented director going by his works

I think Thor could suprise us though as it's not a very well known mainstream character like Batman or Superman but if done right will be catapult into limelight with people expectations rising for an Avengers movie

Would be cool, but I think he's more suited for The Hobbit. And Branagh directing Thor looks to be promising too, so I don't really mind.

Yeah, GDT considered this, until demand for his services went through the roof on the basis of his work on 'Hellboy' and 'Pan's Labyrinth'. He is way too talented to be wasted on 'Thor'. He can do whatever movie he wants to, now. Just look at his schedule: everything after 'The Hobbit' is pretty much a list of personal vanity projects. This is his time. He is officially the industry's hot commodity for directors. That's why he's currently working on what could possibly be the biggest motion picture of all time.

Thor fans, don't despair, Branagh is actually a pretty good director.

Think you misinterpreted me there (I love the 2 Hellboy movies). I'm upset that we likely won't be seeing a Hellboy 3, especially after the setup for it in the 2nd. I still have hope though.

Personally, I'm glad he isn't doing either Hellboy or Thor. I couldn't care less about how the Hobbit turns out, but I think he completely screwed up Hellboy & turned it into Blade II vs X-Men.

What a horrible director.

Devil's Backbone was awful

Blade II was worse than the first

Pan's Labrynth was super weak

I'm still waiting for this Guilliermo Del Toro guy to come along. I still haven't seen one of his movies. I know I haven't, because everybody says he's so great and that many people can't be wrong. But all the movies I've seen that are supposedly his, so far, have been really boring with pissy endings.

Wow talk about a controversial opinion. Guillermo del Toro is one of the most popular filmmakers in Hollywood right now for a reason. He brings an edge and a vision that Hollywood needs, not sure why you can't see that in his movies.

Because they all have weak endings and not much else. He doesn't make stories interesting. He just makes them cool to look at.
He actually dumbs stories way down. Deep, deep down.
He has the same problem that Tim Burton has. He's an art director. Not a movie director.

I'll admit that it's all entertainment and just a product. But, come on, his stories are pretty weak, his characters are boring.

Less happened in Mike Mignola's original Hellboy comics, but they were more interesting. It wasn't just Mike's art. He knew where less was more. Del Toro just throws fireworks at the camera. He overdoes everything.

I bought Hellboy.
I really wanted to like it.

I really wanted to like Pan's Labrynth.

But the guy can't tell a story.

Not to mention the fact that he likes to over-stretch his effects department, so all of the CGI looks like wax.

good thing the Hobbit is just as much PJ's vision as it is his, then. PJ will tell the story, Del Toro will show it. Winning combination to me.

hmm, what an entirely different movie that would have been from what Branagh will make. I bet Del Toro's ideas about Asgard would be more interesting
