Thumbs down Only my local dollar theatre...

One of the free kids' movies for the summer is Marley & Me. It might just be me but a movie
[Show spoiler] where the dog dies at the end and is not exactly a feel good movie
might not be the best idea for little kids to watch.

It is rated PG so the decision is with the parents. Depending on the age and emotional make up of the kids. Life and death are just different sides of the same coin. Agree that this is a very poweful movie and for dog lovers like me even more so.

I did and I don't think that's really the best movie for little kids to watch either.

Children have to learn about life and death somehow. It's easier to explain it in a movie than have to try and explain it when someone they love dies. Doesn't make it any easier when it does happen, but at least they have some understanding of it.

Very well said. Another movie that is in kind of the same boat is Bridge to Terabithia. That one really surprised me at the end.

Bridge To Terabithia is in the same vein,it's also a PG film as well.

When I was a kid, I saw Old Yeller, Bambi, Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark. Although themes of death and loss can be sad (particularly for kids when cute animals are involved), kids can handle it.

Don't forget My Girl, that was pretty sad too. And I watched marley and me with my kids, and they just said "aaawww the dog died" and went on with their lives.

I thought it was pretty misleading marketing that as a kid's movie -- other than the various scenes of the dog acting up, it was a movie about encroaching middle-age angst. All that "unrewarding career" stuff is a real knee-slapper for the kids.

I couldn't figure out who they were aiming for, but they missed both me and my 9 year old daughter.
