yes 720p will still look beautiful, and im gonna buy a 32" samsug 720p cause its cheaper and most games these days are only 720p...but down the road you should get 1080p because its even 100x better looking than 720[ even when 720p is really good looking too!

I've had a Panasonic 42" plasma, which is a 720p/1080i set and the picture is amazing. Down the road I'll get a 1080p, but not for a long time.

I wouldn't say the jump from 720p to 1080p is that huge for most screen sizes, and viewing distances..... But I agree with everyone else..... the jump from DVD quality is huge, and you'll certainly benefit greatly from Blu-ray on a 720p set (and like many of my friends etc... you may even ask yourself how it could possibly get any better )

Also, the improvement in audio quality is very profound, if you have some sort of decent audio gear.... if not..... hold onto your hat... it's a long strange trip down the rabbit hole!!!!

I don't think most people understand the difference between the two, especially those who say that 1080p is 100x better than 720p. It only makes difference if you have a 50" plus screen size and/or if your standing too close, and by close I mean really close. With the approprate distance you won't tell the difference. Many people say that 1080p is way better because tvs with 1080p look better than 720p but the main reason this tv's looks better is the tv itself. Tv's with 1080p are usually higher models that provide greater contrast, fatures, etc..

Mine's only a 37" 720p LCD.

It's light years better than the old standard TV and DVD hookup.

Thats just misleasding, its all got to do with viewing distances, and not with standing to close as that measurement as to wah to close is is just arbitrary. There is a difference if at the same distance from a 720p set and a 1080p set (given more normal viewing distances) regardless of the size of the screen.

That bieng said 720p does look very good, but once you see a 1080p set, you'll probably be itching to upgrade.

Yes and no. Let's say you're standing at the same distance looking at a 1080p and a 720p (exact same specs in tv), if that distance is appropriate for looking at a 720p then you won't notice any difference. With a 1080p you would be able to look at a tv closer, and have a bigger tv without losing resolution. Of course, if you're are at the same distance looking at both sets and it's not appropraite for a 720p, then obviously the 1080p is better. As you said it's all about viewing distance and tv size.

No he isn't, remember that 25% of 720p panels out there are not actually capable of displaying 720p and are not HD. You have 2 panel sizes for 720p sets, 1366 x 768 and 1024 x 768. The 1366 x 768 is the only panel capable of displaying a 1280 x 720 signal, the other must down scale it and is therefore only an "HD ready" panel, not a "true" HD panel. You would notice a very large difference in picture quality between one of these and a 1080p set.

Remember that HDTV must be in 16:9 aspect ratio. So if you multiply the vertical lines of resolution by 16 and divide it by 9 it will tell you how many lines of horizontal resolution you need for an HD picture:

1080 times 16 divided by 9 = 1920
720 times 16 divided by 9 = 1280
768 times 16 divided by 9 = 1365.5

In the case of the 1024 x 768 panel your picture quality is at the mercy of the TV's down scaler (hope it's a good one).

So if it displays 1366 x 768 then it's all good?

I agree, I was merly trying to point out to the OP to be aware of this, and if his viewing distance was close 1080p may be more wothwhile saving for.

Yeah, if he's close (which surprisingly many times happen since people just buy the biggest tv in their budget instad of the right size) I agree 100%, the difference wold be very noticeable. But they should understand this so they can buy smart, save money and maybe spend it in something else to complement the tv like a receiver or speakers, etc..

You're right and is great that you post this so people are aware, but it doens`t change the fact that the other guy is wrong, he's saying that 720p is 100x better than 1080p. As stated by you 25% of the 720 panel aren't capable of displaying it correctly, but by saying "720p is 100x times better than 1080p" he misleads information in talking about the other 75% of panels that are capable to do so. I stand correctly, 720p is not 100x better than 1080p.

100x better in terms of pixels is clearly wrong. But in terms of how much better he/she percieves the image is entirely possible, as ones 'appreciation' is an arbitrary measurement. But yes, I would always recommend 1080p over 720p if you can afford it.
