Default Sony VAIO 0,5GB RAM lost ?

Hi,

I have this Sony VAIO bluray machine (VGN-FW21Z) with 4 GB RAM and 32bit Vista. Due to Vista limitations I understood I will be able to use only 3GB RAM, but I see on TaskManager / Performance only 2,5 GB. Where could be the rest of 0,5 GB? Thank you all.

generally, when the ram listed there doesn't match what's installed in the machine, the difference is being used for the onboard video.

If you boot up into the BIOS (which is often F11 or DEL on startup I think - it should say at the bottom of the screen when it's starting up) you can usually adjust the amount of RAM dedicated to onboard video.

Well first its not a limitation of vista, its a limitation of it being a 32 bit o/s. There are 64 bit versions of vista and xp out there which have a much! higher max for memory

Second, 3GB is only a number most people toss around and not an exact. 4GB is actually the max for 32bit but thats total memory of the entire system so if i have a big dedicated graphics card you can subtract that right off your total. And the system itself reserves alot of memory that again you can knock off that number (varies system to system)

Go to start and type winver

Should say something like

"Physical memory available to windows" 4,191,380KB in my case, but what does yours say there?
