Why is DVD NTSC Native resolution 720x480 (1.5:1) while there is no movie or TV with such aspect ratio? I mean, Blu-ray native resolution is 1920x1080 (1.78:1) makes sense because that is the resolution of HDTV. But 1.5:1? Which TV or movie has such aspect ratio?

Perhaps this is helpful? 704x480 l 16:9 640x480 l 4:3 Display Resolutions l So; the SD DVD aspect ratio of 704x480, and HD Blu-ray aspect ratio of 1920x1080, both fully fiil a 16:9 or 1:78:1 display entirely, therefore fully utilizing the display. Meaning, that while one is an SD resolution, and the other an HD resolution; respectively, both are 1:78:1 display aspect ratios, making this a rather simple issue. While this may seem simplistic, it is really this simple. Aspect ratios of display resolution, and movie resolutions, can quickly become quite technical and confusing; but in the end, these two display resolutions, for SD and HD, are what were referred to in your questions. Movie Resolutions l While there are many, usually a few are commonly used, 1:33:1 - 1:137:1 - 1:85:1 - 2:35:1, that are what we encounter on our respective DVD's and Blu-ray titles. Video Resolutions l The 1:5:1 reference that you made, is an intermediate resolution dealing with the processing of the signal prior to actual display, as we actually see it; it is neither an display resolution or movie resolution. I can't find the exact details but I was reading about pixel mapping recently (wish I could still find the article) and with HDTV it's true 1:1 pixel mapping so the resolution is correct but in NTSC signals a pixel is slightly taller than it is wide and with PAL signal the pixels are slightly wider than they are tall

With 4:3 content using up 720x576 the PAL ones would be thinner than normal, seeing as, for 4:3 content with square pixels it would be 768x576. Maybe with 16:9 SD content they would be wider than tall. |
