Default Question on Blu-ray Vs. DVD

Since Blu-rays are $5 more than DVDs why don't Movie companies like warner, disney, fox, screen gem, ect. just stop selling dvds? I'm sure they have the choice to put it on DVD or Blu or Both but why not just pull DVDs off they would make more money off blus b.c PPL would have to buy blus. it's not like they could go without buying or renting a movie?

Corvettes cost more than Cobalts, but Chevy still makes the Cobalt.

There is still a very large market for DVDs, so the studios produce a product for that market to buy.

Actually they COULD, a lot of people refuse to buy blu-rays due to price. The thing is they could force all those DVD lovers to switch but the transition would take longer. A lot of people can't afford HD TVs or blu-ray players or would be too angry about the death of their format to buy movies for awhile. It's best to do it the way it's been done now, really the only way to do it. What helps is when people like us educate DVD users so they can switch faster.

Let's see...

A History of Violence was the last movie released on VHS in the US and that was in 2006.

Bringing Out The Dead was released on US Laserdisc in late 2000 and it was the last Laserdisc released in the US.

Tokyo Raiders has the distinction of the being the final Laserdisc released in Japan but the disc had issues when it was released on Sep 1, 2001. The last properly pressed Japanese Laserdisc was the Cell on July 25th, 2001.

Educating DVD users might work for some, but not with the Lady I work with. She will kick and scratch all the way until she is forced to buy it. I tell her that Blu-Ray compared to DVD is like going from Kansas to Oz. I just get one of these.

It depends. It won't work for my brother-in-law. Long story short, his home is HD-ready and all, but he still wouldn't upgrade to Blu. The reason? He and his wife just have very low standard in PQ. I think I am done dealing with those two...

I disagree with this statement...... Whether you think it's an "Apples-to-Apples" comparison or not..... DVDs and Blu-rays both have to compete for an audience with Box-offices, as well as Cable Movie channels, and streaming/downloading, etc etc etc....

If they stopped selling DVDs, they wouldn't be able to afford to produce Blu-rays.

What we need is a government mandated "Switch to HD", just like the switch to digital TV. Give out coupons for $40 players, and have a set time to stop producing DVD's. Then stretch it out for another 4 months and have a slow transition to the new format that will still force some people to adopt at the last minute or be left behind.

and I am sure people where saying the same thing when DVD came out. Yes DVD is big now but it is falling fast and BD is growing fast. Eventually DVD will be so small and useless that it will be an expense for studios instead of a money earner.

Personally I prefer both format to coexist for the time being.

I think they will do co-exist for a while i would say for atleast 2013-2014

The reason why

there are lot of upconverting dvd players and even though if they starts fading away bluray players will do upconverting regular dvd to upto 1080p

Hopwefully by that time bluray players will cost much less than now and movies on bluray will be same price as dvd now

then may be people will what the heck its same price and more quality and then start changing
i hope it will happen soon. hey ....who knows

great comments here. personally, i can say that currently, the blu-ray market would not survive without the dvd market to support it.

the price point will end up dropping, gradually, giving others the opportunity to buy into the blu-ray experience. remember that just recently we have players going for around 100 dollars, comparing this to its initial cost of around half a grand to be the least.

id also reconsider 'forcing' the people like the digital switch, from dvd to blu-ray, may backlash towards the market, leaving us screwed. nobody likes their arm twisted for something they dont necessarily need.

In the Fire of Socal!
Exclamation

Even through the format war has been over for while now.
Consumers are still reluctant to give up there DVD's!
As many of us on this site know that Blu-ray is the way to go, there's still a large amount of people who don't understand what Blu-ray is.
I've been a Blu-ray supporter since 2007, it took my brother and one of my best friends till this year to join the Blu-ray family.
Also, not everyone can afford a HDTV and there's no point to buy Blu-ray if you don't own a TV that can display HD.

On a seprate note: Can any one help out! I'm giving a presintation on Blu-ray this wednesday and I need to find out who were the sole supporters of HD-DVD during the war and who supported both.
Thanks!

1) Exclamation point isn't needed, as it isn't really too surprising this early in the format's life.

2) it's not true that there is no point to Blu-ray without an HDTV, so perhaps there are aspects of Blu-ray that you, yourself don't understand as well.

Probably the Bluray discs are 5 dollars more than DVDs, but in US. Here in Europe am I still waiting for "Cars" which doesn't come under 30 Euros (since like 2 years now). Of course are titles down to 15 Euros, but not the ones I'd spend the money for, to have them on blu. And average is like 17-18 Euros, that's still expensive. In the same time (the same titles) you can buy on DVDs with 5 Euros /piece or buy 3 get 4 (finally like 6 Euro / piece), and from 17 to 5 is a difference. This is why I am mostly still on DVD wagon, although I've got like 55 blu discs and have to Sony bluray machines.

I'm always looking to learn more, deffinently about Blu-ray.
When you say its not true that there's no point to buy Blu-ray without a HDTV, what am I missing?
I don't see how you can watch Blu-ray picture quality without a TV that can handle high def.
I'm interested in learning more.
