Thumbs up PS3 use more watts than my 50" Plasma or my Gaming Rig PC

I monitor my power usage recently, and i find out ps3 a lot of watts, 180-230 watts. Which is more than my plasma (energy saving mode) is around 140-170 and my fully loaded pc with 24" monitor for like 220.

& the thumbs up is for?....

I was thinking you should list your PCs CPU, GPU(s), RAM, PSU, basically the whole spec & the method use to measure as we'll see if it's a fair comparison then

10 watt over a high end ußer gaming PC would have me worried but.... i think that won't be the case

The original 60GB PS3s were 200Watts (under load). The old 40GB PS3 is only around 135Watts (under load). PCs are around 360Watts without monitor.

EDIT: Let's get a bit more specific. Here is a breakdown done June 7, 2009 (Page 6 and 7).

* Processor: Intel Core i7-920 (2.66GHz)
* Mainboard: Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD3R (iX58 chipset)
* System memory: 3x1GB Samsung (PC3-10666, 1333MHz, CL9)
* Hard disk drive: 1000GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST31000333AS
* Graphics card: PCI-E 896MB Leadtek WinFast GTX 260 Extreme+ W02G0686
* Optical drive: DVD±RW Optiarc AD-7201S
* System case: IN-WIN IW-J614TA F430 (550W)

= 371Watts under load WHOOPS...under max load is 502Watts (page 8)

The GPU is better than RSX (of course), but the Intel CPU isn't better than Cell. I would estimate the new 80GB PS3 at 115Watts under load.

* Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E8600 (3.33GHz)
* CPU cooler: GlacialTech Igloo 5063 PWM (E) PP
* Mainboard: ASUS P5Q (iP45 chipset)
* System memory: 2x2GB DDR2 SDRAM Kingston ValueRAM (PC6400, 800MHz, CL6)
* Hard disk drive: 500GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.12
* Graphics card: PCI-E 512MB Sapphire Radeon HD 4850
* Optical drive: DVD±RW Optiarc AD-5200S
* Card-reader: Sony MRW620
* System case: IN-WIN IW-S627TAC

= 189Watts under load

To back up my estimates, here is a quote from the Folding @ Home FAQ:
Quote:
What is the power consumption of the PS3 running the FAH client?

The original PS3 model will use about 200 Watts while running Folding@home. A later model PS3 (with a 40 GB hard drive) will use about 115 Watts.

That (and the noise) is one of the reasons why I'm looking at getting a standalone player for Blu-ray/DVD usage. I've got one of the original 60GB units and it gets hot and LOUD. Im afraid that with as movie watching as I do that it's going to burn up on me one day!

Ya my old 60GB one was quite loud...but I just got a new 80GB model and WOW is there a huge difference. I couldn't even hear it over my TV speakers with the volume down. It was night and day. I listen to movies/games/music pretty loud on my home theater, so the 60GB didn't bother me at all, but this one is so quiet!

That is incorrect also.

List of ALL Home Appliance Wattage

The 80GB PS3 draws LESS power than a sewing machine or Crock Pot on High!

Some of the figures in the link above have changed with newer products
Quote:
Battery Charger -220 watts
Fan - Portable 20" -180 watts
Refrigerator 12 cu. Ft. Single Door -225 watts
Crock Pot Cooker (High) -150 watts
Sewing Machine -120 watts

^^Of course, it was false. Even though that article was talking about the 60GB PS3s, it said the PS3 would draw 200Watts WITH THE POWER OFF. This is clearly incorrect, since the PS3 only draws 4 Watts or less when in stand-by mode.

Haha, ya I know I made sure to comment that it was from Gamespot so to be taken with a grain of salt.
There has been no noticeable increase/decrease in my home power usage by bringing in a PS3.

Of all the home application i test, microsoft use the most watts when in operation, my microsoft is only 900 watts but when is on i test it it show pass 1000 watts, also the water boiler application use like 650 watts when is boiling water.

The application use the most watts on stanby mode are the av receiver i got. use 39-40 watts on standby mode, which is a suprise, the dish network cable box use also 20 watts on standbuy, subwoofer 10 watts just when it plug it. Is good idea to use extension cord or power center to master on and off at all of the home theater system, the stanby power use in my home theater sytem is 90 - 100 watts when is all stanby mode.

Receiver 40 watts
Dish HD Cable box 20 watts
DIsh Somesoft of box require to connect 20 watts
panny bd605k 7 watts
ps3 4 watts
50" Plasma 1 watts
Subwoofer 10 watts

Aren't there some forum rules about interjecting fact and logic into a discussion?

Off with you now - shoo! shoo!

Here's a good article about power consumption (remember though that this is the 60GB PS3 we're talking about and usage on new models has gone down considerably)

http://www.hardcoreware.net/reviews/review-356-1.htm

For them it goes: Gaming PC > PS3 > 360 >>>> Wii
