Are you trying to hook up an xbox or 360? I've hooked up both to a Samsung LCD with no problem. I used HDMI with the 360 and component with the xbox. You have to set progressive scan and resolutions manually with the original xbox.

The component cables on the 360 have an HDTV and TV switch on them near the portion that plugs into the back of the system... what you can do is switch it to the non-HDTV option, which will make the resolution 480i, which any tv should support. You can then go into the settings menu and set the resolution for HDTV settings to something your TV supports (720p, 1080i, whatever it may be). Once you have the proper resolution set, turn off the 360, then switch the component cable switch back to HDTV... then turn the system back on. Everything should work fine, then.

PS, he said he wants to play Gears, so I would assume a 360

I didn't catch that part about wanting to play gears, if so it is a 360. and like you said you might already have given him the answer to his question.

Yeah, he said it in a single sentence as a reply in this thread... no biggie, though, just thought I'd point it out

I only read the first post, thats why i didn't realize it. but thanks. however i did notice one thing about that switch in the component for the 360 it is hard to notice it, as if it was intentionally hidden for some reason. It took me a while to realize that it was there in the first place. I think MS should at least to make it more clearer like have it in the system setup like the PS3. just a thought I wanted to share.

I completely agree... not only is it sort of hidden, but it's a pain to actually switch. It's pretty much flush with the base of the plug and it has a little bit of texture that's annoying to catch with your finger or thumb. What would be even better is if the 360 had a way to manually reboot to the lowest resolution by holding the power button down, like the PS3 has. That would be tailor made for a situation like this.
