Iceman it sounds like you are open to adding the ggw titles. I suggest you also add the R-rated blu-ray of Pirates II which is also on amazon. I just like comprehensiveness in the database (relative to amazon) so I know that I won't be missing out on anything. If there were a more clear standard as to what titles are excluded then it wouldn't be as big of a problem. Using amazon as a criterion makes it clear. Just my 2 cents.

Tell me what is the difference between Pirates I and II and say Caligula or 9 Songs? I think there may actually be more real, explicit scenes in 9 Songs than there is in Pirates. -- (iceman -- good point about the Disney thing! -- I agree that it should be an opt-in feature for anything not listed in amazon or on a separate domain as you suggest ... but I'm not that interested in seeing non-amazon titles in the database)

BTW guys I guess we are using "mainstream" to mean anything that some critic or other deems a serious work/studio, etc. since many of these "mainstream" films with explicit, real sex are not by big Hollywood studios but small independent outfits. Some of the films with explicit, real sex are recognized as masterpieces or classics by film critics such as Roger Ebert -- for example Pola X.

Pirates is porn. It was intended to be porn and it is porn. They edited down to get an R rating. Caligula was invisioned to be and it is a mainstream film that got screwed over by Penthouse.

I haven't seen those other 2 movies, but you should know the difference between porn and movies.

Hahaha! I never saw Caligula until I bought it used at Blockbuster on Blu-Ray. It was sitting on the shelf, used, for $3. I was like; "Can't pass up a movie on Blu-Ray for $3." I took it home and I was like; "Oh, My God!" Now, I watch porn on a daily basis. I have Porn DVDs. Now, this film threw me off because it has Malcolm McDowell and Helen Mirren. I was like; "Whoa!"

You didn't answer the question. Caligula is not rated R. Both films have a plot and art and both have real explicit sex. Also ... you didn't address 9 Songs which didn't get allegedly "screwed over" by anything but was that way by its very theme and design.

If you haven't seen Caligula and 9 Songs you are not qualified to offer an opinion about how they differ from Pirates I and II. I repeat there's more (in terms of run time proportional to film length) explicit, real sex in 9 Songs than there is in either of the Pirates I and II movies

It doesn't matter about the R rating. There are numerous mainstream films that are NC-17; like Lust, Caution and Evil Dead. Caligula is more or less NC-17.

Not something a high school kid with an obvious overactive libido would understand. At least he's keeping in character.

I fully support the decision to remove the thread in question. I personally do not have anything against sexuality or porn for that matter. People's sexual preferences are their own, and I respect everyone's. Whether it is gay or straight porn, it really does not have a place in this forum. I believe that Iceman explained his reasoning in a very mature manner, and there's no reason for anyone to be offended.

Heh, yeah. Caligula = Mainstream. Pirates, which we all know is a porno take on Pirates of the Caribbean = Porn.

I'm still waiting for that hammer to come down.

So answer the question. What is the difference between 9 Songs and Pirates that would make one porn and one not? NC-17 is the replacement for the old X rating. And yes it doesn't matter. The question, is what makes 9 Songs mainstream and Pirates not mainstream. Neither are popular films. 9 Songs is as "arthouse" as it gets. Mainstream audiences would never have seen it in theaters except in "arthouse" theaters since "mainstream" theaters like Regal don't show anything above an R rating.

9 Songs is meant to be an art film where as Pirates was made for you to masturbate.

Jeez, I swear.

That's funny as I was just browsing through a People magazine this morning at breakfast and it had a picture of Helen Mirren at 62 in a bikini....and she looked damn good! Well, good to those of us who think you don't need to be 5'10" and 110lbs to be considered attractive, if you know what I mean...

Yeah.

Caligula has a mainstream actors and well known actors likes Malcolm McDowell and Peter O'Toole.

Pirates has porn actors and actresses like Teagan Pressly and Evan Stone.

Here's an illustration of the problem I see that I talked about. Some critics praised 9 Songs. Some didn't like it but still recognized it as a legitimate movie of entertainement and/or artistic value. But some critics said it wasn't a legitimate movie at all but was "porn." So if 9 Songs comes to blu-ray, it leaves me with doubt in my mind as to whether it will be in the database and whether threads discussing it will be okay.

This is what wikipedia says:

Quote:
The film was controversial on its original release due to its sexual content, which included unsimulated footage of the two leads having sexual intercourse and performing oral sex as well as a scene of ejaculation. The release sparked a debate over whether the scenes of unsimulated sex artistically contributed to the film's meaning or crossed the border into pornography. It was released unrated in the U.S. but received an 18 certificate from the British Board of Film Classification in Britain and became the most explicit mainstream film to be so rated in the country.

In Australia, the Office of Film and Literature Classification gave the film an X rating which would have prevented the film being shown theatrically and restricted sale of the film to the Australian Capital Territory and Northern Territory. The OFLC Review Board later passed the film with an R rating, although the South Australian Classification Council raised the rating back to X in South Australia.

In New Zealand, while the Society for the Promotion of Community Standards lobbied for the film to be kept out of cinemas, it was passed uncut at R18 by the Office of Film and Literature Classification. The film was broadcast on New Zealand pay TV Rialto Channel in July 2007.

In June 2008 the film was broadcast on Dutch national television by the public broadcasting station VPRO. There was no public debate on this broadcast, perhaps because some months earlier the 1972 pornographic film Deep throat was shown by the public broadcaster BNN. Deep Throat raised some questions in the public debate (initiated by small Christian parties), but there was no legal basis to prohibit its broadcast.

9 Songs currently holds a 25% on Rotten Tomatoes as "Rotten" and a slightly higher 28% from the critics labelled as "Cream Of The Crop".

Fail. Lots of "mainstream" films use porn actors. For example, the Girlfriend Experience is either on blu or coming to blu and it uses a currently active porn star as one of its leads. She is doing mainstream and doing porn at the same time (this is her first mainstream role I believe).

Also, IIRC, Romance which is "mainstream" and has real, explicit sex also uses some porn actors/actresses. Heck, Bloodrayne (or its sequel, don't remember) used real prostitutes.

And 9 Songs does not use a well known actress for its lead role. I think it was her first role and only role as far as I know.

I think this is where you are getting confused. Blockbuster does not carry uncut versions of these films.

So that's why you are not understanding that there is little difference between Caligula and Pirates. It becomes even clearer when comparing 9 Songs and Pirates.
