How important are Surround speakers (5.1)?

Current setup is:

Sony STR-DG720 Receiver
Polk Monitor 50's Front speakers
Polk CS10 Center Speaker
Sony SS-MSP75 Surround Speakers (came with a 5.1 kit I had)
Sony SAWMSP75 AMP (came with 5.1 kit I had)


I have an extra pair of Pioneer S-HF21-LR 100W. I can't get 7.1 setup due to my room layout. If i were to use the Pioneer's are surrounds, I'd have to try to find 2 new stands, as the stands I have now are for satellite speakers. Any recommendations? Are those Sony surrounds that lacking?

In short, the surrounds are important, just not as improtant as your center and fronts.

I recommend improving your surrounds from those Sony's if you can swing it.

NewEgg (who else?) has the M30's (if you want to stay with Polk, but your surrounds do not have to match your fronts and center) for only $99. The M40's are back in stock now too, at only $150 also. Here are the links.....

I'd go with Polk on the surrounds also. Made a huge difference in my setup. 30s if you need to wall mount, 40s if your just going to set them on stands or something.

I was just watching The Incredible Hulk the other night and when the evil hulk starts swinging that chain in the end battle it feels like I'm standing right in front of him with the chain circling me. The transition from speaker to speaker is seamless when they all sound alike.
