I love Oppo but they dropped the ball on this unit because it's not region free. Not even the DVD side of it. It's like taking a giant step backwards.

If OPPO made any part of the player region-free, they would lose their license to create any other players in the future. If you want a modded player that is DVD/Blu-Ray Region Free, they are available online on other websites.

Dude, what? 1st off- they'd never be able make another player again. Secondly, people have already hacked the damned thing for region free playback.

Hacked or modded? There's a difference. If it's the former, please direct me to instructions.

I agree, though, Oppo sucks for this. They wouldn't be the first to make a region-free player.

Hacked- it's a firmware hack. Doubt I can really talk about it further here since it's bordering piracy/defeating region codes. Honestly, I don't know where to find the firmware currently anyway as I don't have one, but I've read about it on AVS. Again, the BDA would hand them their asses to wear as hats if they tried to release a region-free BD player.

I had ps3 and still getting oppo, because my one is 60gb produce too much noise and heat that can disturb my movie experience. I had panny bd60 and that one aleady produce better picture and the bitstream sound.

not to sidetrack the thread, but that statement has no credibility.

I am going to ask a stupid question but for Blus only is this player really worth it? I have a Samsung BD3600, LG DB300 and a PS3 80G and all produce excellent sound and video. How much mory could I really gain or is it other features that makes it so attractive?

For me it is the very fast load times and quick response times to the other features and controls. If you want to read in excruciating detail what other people think about the differences, here is a link.

I was/am really tempted by this player, and I have a PS3. I'm interested in the SACD and DVD-A and upscaling as much as BD playback. If I was JUST interested in blu-ray playback, I wouldn't look at this player. It's probably not going to be significantly different than your other players.

People forgot that this oppo player also support media file include mkv. I do agree is hard to said this player will be much better without actually able to see them in action on a store. But just about every cirtic gave this player a 5 out 5.

Dude, I'm surprised you don't already have it pre-ordered. This thing is right up your alley. You're getting into SACD, you still have a lot of DVD's you love, and this is a premier piece of kit. If I had more disposable income....

Aramis, there's the key phrase right there. I don't. $500 is a big piece of cash to throw out right now.

Does BDP 83 DVD playback does better or worst than OPPO DV-980H?

I had Panasonic BD60, i could just get 980h for dvd playback, i do need one play my media file, seems to me 980h does that.
