what i want to know is...if you have vista and upgrade to 7, and then you have to reinstall 7 at some point (say you got a huge virus and need to wipe the computer)....can you?? i'm guessing no....

the last thing i saw, you can do a clean install from the upgrade disc. if thats what you're asking

I just saw this on the upgrade disc. It's cnet so take it with a grain of salt. If it's true, then I'm in since I'd prefer to do a full wipe of the drive anyway.

The upgrade prices apply to those moving from a previous version of Windows to Windows 7, but only those from Windows Vista will be able to upgrade without doing a clean installation of the product.

right, and that makes sense. vista users can do a normal upgrade without losing there documents/applications/etc, but xp owners will have to do a clean wipe. that's completely fine/understandable with me. i just want to make sure if i ever have to reinstall windows 7 for any reason and i want to wipe my hard drive, i have the ability to do so with the upgrade disc. seems fishy.

the quote i saw that said you could do a clean install was from microsoft, when i find it again, i'll post it.

but keep in mind..you can also do a clean install from the vista upgrade disc, so expect the same

if thats how you want to look at it, sure. but its good enough to get xp users to upgrade
