That kind of stinks. I was REALLY hoping we would see Doomsday as a downloadable character.
At the same time, in some ways I find this to be a relief. I purchased an import of the European version of the game for PS3 because I wanted to have the uncensored content (i.e. Joker's gun Fatality), and while there are ways to do it, I knew it would be something of a pain to try and be able to purchase PSN content from another region. So, this takes away that concern. Plus, I have issues with downloadable content (and especially downloadable full games) in general. I still pretty much have every game system I ever bought (the only things I have ever traded in were some Gameboy models to upgrade to newer/better models) and the games that go with it. I did at one point buy another used SNES because while mine still technically worked, there was an issue with the AC adapter cord being loose, and disconnecting very easily while playing, so I got another one. Anyway, my point is this. With most old game systems that are no longer made/supported, if the system dies, I can hunt down a replacement on ebay or a second hand store or something. The same goes if a game I own for an older system gets damaged, I just have to track down another copy somewhere. My concern is that with DLC, once these systems are no longer supported (and/or when the lisences for some of the DLC content ends and is no longer available online), and your hard drive or the system itself dies, there will be NO way to recover it. And since I do tend to look at the stuff I buy in a long term sense (since I do pull out old systems from time to time and play older games), the idea of DLC kind of annoys me for that reason. Esspecially when they (in some cases) obviously hold back on what the game could initially include just to sell it to you as add-on content later. While I don't let this concern completely stop me from purchasing DLC (since in some respects it would be silly for me to miss out on enjoying something now out of the fear of losing access to it several years from now or something), it is still a concern for me, and I do tend to limit myself to DLC that I really want. I will likely pass on content that I am iffy about because of this concern. Once the tracks for Rock Band are no longer available (and that will happen sooner or later), it will suck for anyone who spent a ton of money on them and have that as possible half (or even more than half) of their Rock Band gaming experience. A lot of people seem gung-ho about DLC, but its still a relatively young concept for console gaming, and for the most part the issue of having it completely go away hasn't come up much yet. But it will, and I think when it does, the sheer inconvenience of it is going to hit people like a ton of bricks. |
