Default Memorex 4x Blu-ray blanks

Hi all,
I wonder if anybody has had any experiances with the Memorex 25GB BR-R 4x blu ray discs using the LG GGW H20 burner.
I have just had an interesting problem using the LG GGW H20 with TDK 25GB BD-R 4x & the TDK BD-RE 2x working great yet the TDK 25GB BD-R 2x failing every time.
I contacted LG and all they could suggest is that I try a disc first, which could get very expensive. You would hope or expect that they could have provided a list of disc brand suitability to there burner.

Thanks all
john

I have the same burner, and in my experiences, the TDK's are crap. From what I've read and heard, TDK is now Imation.

I've had the best luck with Verbatim and Sony branded BR media. And oddly enough the Memorex and Ritek seem to burn reasonably well. I just don't know how the long-term longevity of Memorex and Ritek will be. The Philips brand fail for some reason, but at least that disc was free so I didn't lose out on anything.

If you can, buy one or two of the Memorex, Ritek, Verbatim and Sony discs and see which work the best for you. And don't be running anything else in the background on your computer while doing your burns, otherwise that could interfere.

I have a GGW-H20L. I have had luck with LG BD-RE, Verb BR-RE, and TDK BD-RE (50GB)... however it was acting up on a 45GB burn today, previously it worked OK.

I have an LG GBW-H20L, which is probably very similar to yours. In my experience, Memorex BD-R media is absolute crap. I bought a spindle of 15 back in January. Back then I burned 3 of them with personal videos that I had edited in Vegas Pro 8 and encoded to MPEG-2 at 40 Mbps to conserve the highest quality possible. After burning them I played them in my Sony BDP-S300 player and they played perfectly well.

About four months later, I wanted to play one of them in the Sony and it wouldn't play. I'm extremely careful with all my discs, I never put a fingerprint on them, I always grab them by the edges, and I use a dust remover can (the kind that blows out with high pressure) to make sure there's not a single dust particle on the surface. Even so, this disc wasn't recognized by neither the player nor the LG burner.

So I tried the other discs that I had burned. They would play, but they would freeze the motion for a split second every second or so, amking them unwatchable. As I said before, all these discs had played just fine after burning them initially in January. So it's obvious to me that these Memorex crap media is of extremely poor quality and the materials in them deteriorate rapidly, so I would not recommend them to anybody, even though they are very cheap. The first reason I bought them was because I rarely had any problems with Memorex DVD or CD media, but after this experience I will not buy any Memorex media ever again.

Thats very helpful and thank you.
What do you use now.
I am finding that the TDK BD-R 4x are fine but you have to wonder about the long term deteriation, if any.

The brand name of the disc unfortunately is not an indicator of quality except for Verbatim since they make their own media. Sony makes the majority of their media also. Memorex media is usually made by CMC Magnetics and they make crap. TDK used to make all of their own media which was of high quality but in the past year started outsourcing to...wait for it....CMC Magnetics. Almost all low end media..HP, Imation, you name it...is made by this company. There are only a few manufacturers that make truly good media. Stick with Verbatim if you truly want reliability. Sony is good when THEY make it, but they've been known to do some outsourcing here and there too so make sure media you purchase from them is made in Japan. If its made in Taiwan beware.

Well, I haven't bought anything but that so far, I had bought the Memorex 15 disc spindle because of being the cheapest by unit from a brand that at least back then was reliable to me. The only other blu-ray recordable disc I have is a Sony BD-RE that I bought along with the burner in Circuit City in December '08, and it worked fine so far, but it's made in Japan. I only bought Sony because they had nothing else at the store in BD-RE and I was eager to make test burns. A couple of years ago I had bought a 5 pk of Sony DVD-RW and they were crap. I had to throw 4 of them away because they were useless after only a few months. And in 2005 I had bought a Macinotsh that came with a Sony burner, also crap, it lasted a year and then started with burning errors on many discs.

I ordered 3 Verbatim 96434 from tapeandmedia.com, they are $6.33. I can report back in about 6 months and say if they still work or not.

Memorex's 2x BD-R media was made by Panasonic and was very good. I haven't tried their 4x BD-R media but from what I can gather, its made by Ritek.

If its Ritek then stay away. They do not make high quality media...not as bad as CMC, but not very good either. Verbatim is the only media made outside of Japan that I would trust. Any other media has to be manufactured in Japan to be considered reliable.

Ritek's 2x BD-R media was okay, but I haven't tried their 4x discs yet. If they're anything like their CD or DVD media, listen to lojack1976 and stay away.
