Smile About time!

This is one of those classic films that deserve the Criterion treatment. Hoping Fox does a full blown 4K restoration (or even 2K) and give Kino an excellent transfer. Kino has not been my favorite on classic films because the transfers have only been mediocre and not great looking like the blu ray format can produce. Keeping my eyes open for this one!!

Unfortunately, the only score option is a truly bizarre and inappropriate one that includes several Indian pop songs with vocals. Yes, vocals.

Default The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog (1927)

The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog (1927) shows up on this web site as a Criterion Collection release, date of release unknown. This movie is the one directed by Alfred Hitchcock.

This is one of the better Ripper films. I hope Murder By Decree makes it to blu someday. The holy grail would be the BBC Jack The Ripper series from the early 70s hosted by two of the characters from Z-Cars. All the character dialogue in that is taken from actual police/court transcripts and contemporary newspaper interviews. I'm not holding my breath on that one since it has never even had an official dvd release.

Criterion has it up for streaming on Amazon. They haven't released it on Blu-Ray... yet.

Laird Cregar is great in this. If I'm not mistaken, he died shortly after completing it. Career cut tragically short.

I enjoyed this but felt the restoration was a bit iffy. Lots of small flaws cleared up, but several scenes with glaring vertical scratches.

Yup, the transfer and restoration is great but oh my god, the soundtrack is horrible. Next time I'm muting the audio and syncing something else to it.

Anyone know if the German or French transfers are better?

Good question, it looks as if this may be out of print now at KL. Hangover Square looks good, but the Undying Monster and this title have the older Kino habit of boosted gamma generally just washes out the picture.

I grabbed The Lodger and The Hangover during the current Kino Noirvember sale and think I got the last copy as it no longer showed any version to add to cart after I placed my order. That's a shame about the boosted gamma, but I guess it's better than not owning the film at all.

PS I called Kino regarding my order and it is not out of print - just temporarily out of stock due to the massive NOIRVEMBER sale.
