System for my girlfriend's place....

My girlfriend wants descent sound system for her place. I was thinking about getting her some Polk Monitor 60's (they are cheap right now),a center channel, and a receiver. Shes putting up $500 towards it, I can get the Monitor's for around $150. Now the whole issue is a receiver and a center channel. So I need some help there, any suggestions, remember it doesn't have to be the best thing on the market, just something to get the job done.
