Toshiba Chief Hints At Launching Blu-Ray Disc Ops

Toshiba Corp. (6502) President Atsutoshi Nishida did not rule out the possibility of selling DVD recorders using the Blu-ray Disc format when addressing shareholders at the firm's general meeting here Wednesday.

"It makes no sense to decide not to enter the Blu-Ray market simply because we lost the DVD-format war. We cannot change the fact that we lost, but we would like to keep our options open," he said.

Toshiba pushed for global adoption of its HD-DVD format, but failed to gain sufficient support from major U.S. movie studios. This prompted the firm to pull out of its HD-DVD operations in spring 2008, declaring at that time that it would not handle Blu-ray products.

But Nishida's latest remark appears to indicate that Toshiba is considering reversing that decision in light of the significant growth in the market for these products.

It is inevitable that this would happen. Sony did likewise when they lost the VHS/Beta war.....too much money at stake!

Yep, I love Toshiba... all my TVs are Toshiba, my computers and more. Can't wait to get a Toshiba BD Player.

Indeed. All my notebooks have been Toshiba's so far and I've been very happy with them. For my next one, I was considering not getting a Toshiba for the mere fact they refused to add Blu-ray drives to them. Now if they do, I'll stick with Toshiba for my next purchase. Glad to see them coming around ... keeping up the boycott on Blu-ray would have hurt them in the long run.

Nishida said that Blu-ray recorders in particular appear to be a viable option, adding one reason is that the video disc format war is lost once and for all for Toshiba. Another reason might be that demand for Blu-ray recorders is on the rise (especially in Japan) and Toshiba wants to have a share of that market segment.

Another factor is surely pressure from the shareholders, as Toshiba is in a devastating financial state. For the current fiscal year, Nishida said his company is on track to save $3.5 billion after he apologized for the bad numbers in fiscal 2008.

I have owned two HD DVD players.. They both sucked, buggy, DRE's, etc.. Not to say they couldn't make a good blu-ray player but they'll need to prove themselves first.

Toshiba's made plenty of other good products.

Indeed, especially considering the prevalence of consumers brand matching their components (HDTV + disc player).

Right now Toshiba doesn't have that offering, nor the ability to offer a bundle incentive.

My VGN-AR190G, it has Toshiba HDDs in it.
My portable HDD - also Toshiba.

Nothing wrong with Toshiba built hardware.

agree, I think we all knew it would happen sooner or later. As for the news, I don't really care, I am not a big fan of Toshiba, the DVD player I had several generations ago was not bad, but I was really not happy with the TV and laptop. If they make a good player I won't preclude them, but my experience has not been good with their products so they would need the right features at the right price.

They better not think to long if the company is in trouble! And if they are in trouble I can see why. They lost the format war and up until now they wouldnt even think of supporting Blu ray. My have times changed. They see the money they can make and they are finally coming aorund. Toshiba makes good HDTV's from what I have read and heard so why not jump into the Blu ray format? It the logical choice and I am sure they would be warmly welcomed by the Blu ray association and fans. I say the more the merrier!

Maybe now, slowly, the nay-sayers will give up. Perhaps this will be the end of al those HD-DVD supports complaining. They will see their old fav going to Blu, so they will rethink dissing Blu.

Yeah, that will happen just before it starts raining gumballs. Besides, I would miss the daily comedy from the naysayers.

if you think about it-- what other choice is there? Is Toshiba just going to sit there are NOT have a hidef optical disc? They will lose millions not just because of missing out on blu-ray players but also laptops with bluray
drives, big screen TV's (many people want matching components) etc etc

I'm flat out amazed that they have waited this long to "consider their
options"-- maybe they need to pick up the pace before they go out
of business!
