Default Why do SCE games run & look great? Here's why!

A great deal of Sony's internal games have set the bar in terms of graphics and tech for PS3. Today while geeking-out over credits on numerous Sony titles, I learnt of two teams with reoccuring credits in a few of them, under two groups; 'ICE Team' and 'Advanced Techonolgy Group'. They essentially go around to different studios and give them a hand in programming for PS3.

Both these teams have shared there expertise in; Resistance; MotorStorm; Warhawk; R&CF; Heavenly Sword; LBP; Uncharted and many many others. Team ATG aren't shy in giving third-party studios a hand either, a few members such Simon Brown, Tim Dann, Colin Hughes, and Nicolas Serres (who've worked on the above mentioned titles) have been fingering RockStar North's GTAIV. It won't be surprising to see them credited in Agent either.

Doing further research, ICE Team resides at NAUGHTY DOG's BUILDING! Yes, that's right. They've also been doing a bit of engine building for third-party developers such as the PlayStation Edge. :P

Interesting article. But what about MGS4? Doesn't that look and run great?

MGS4 is because of the amounts of pure love put into it..

GTA4 though don't think that is actually a good example..

You're missing the point. SCE have basically a secret development team that handle problems for the company's internal studios. Which is why SCE developed titles are consistent or better on a technical stand point.

As dkknight mentioned, GTAIV is a horrid piece of evidence to support the claim.

ATG people assisted where it was needed with GTA4, but thats largely Rockstars effort for a multiplatform title. Team ICE however are the technical geniuses, which are the guys i'm referring to most who've been doing the internal stuff.

As I recall Rockstar actually talked about them, I believe the reference was they were ninjas.. and that they wore lab coats.. and absolute geniuses and that sony sent them in because they couldn't get GTA4 to run and the ninjas came in and fixed it..

ICE Team is not a secret in the industry. Sony guys are available to assist pretty much any developer with any game.

Actually, Edge isn't an engine. It's a series of optimized systems (best practices) for the Cell architecture. The developer engine developed by Sony is called the PhyreEngine. It's available to all PS3 devs.
