My third favourite movie of the year.

The Half of It is easily the best teen flick from Netflix. Leah Lewis, Alexxis Lemure and Daniel Diemer deliver excellent performances, as Alice Wu's direction and writing is so compelling and unique.

[Show spoiler]The hot spring sequence is a standout, along with Ellie and Aster reuniting, with the former kissing her. A strong way to leave things open-ended between them.

I just admired how

[HorrorBlu]

This movie really sneaks up on you. It starts out with your pretty typical teen movie set-up, the smart girl is helping a football player win the heart of the popular girl by writing her love letters on his behalf. From there, it doesn't really go where you'd expect. It does fall into some predictable teen movie tropes that are maybe beneath it, but overall I'd say this is easily the best of NetFlix's Original Teen Movie offerings by far. Unless you count The Babysitter, although Deidra & Laney Rob A Train was pretty good too.

Highly recommended. I can't believe Alice Wu hasn't had another movie since Saving Face 15 years ago, I hope we don't have to wait so long for her next one.
